I used Google to find a company to empty our septic tank. I wish I hadn't called Mr. Septic. Mr. Septic has a very clean and simple website and plainly says "Our message is simple, we offer septic tank pumping at $189.00" My initial phone call was taken right away by a tech who took my information and with great sense of urgency told me he would be by tonight or tomorrow. I told him not to worry about it and enjoy his Friday night, and we could wait until morning. A woman called later to follow up and get my address. I was feeling good at this point because of the multiple points of contact.
I decided to go ahead and dig a hole for the guys so they could access the tank easily Saturday am. I dug a hole that has a diameter equal to that of a 55 gallon drum. i figured it would save the guys time and they would appreciate the head start on the project. During the night the hole accumulated some water due to rain. we live on a hill and as the 2 techs confirmed, there was 8 inches of water from the downpour and runoff in this hole. I used math and can tell you that one gallon of water will take up .54 inches in a 55 gallon drum so at 8 inches we were had almost 15 gallons of water in the hole.
The team arrived around noon Saturday only 2 hours later than their dispatchers Saturday 9am followup call to tell me they were "en-route" had promised. When they arrived they seemed interested in getting to work.
As the team was positioning their truck and unfastening hoses the lead tech asked my how much I was quoted on the phone. I said $189, like your website says. he scratched his head, wrinkled his nose and told me "that's not going to happen, let me call the boss man". He called his "Boss Man" and described the extra water on top of the hols and estimated the volume of water to be at least 100 gallons. at a cost of an extra $100 dollars. Evidently his "boss man" said to "use your judgement" and make the call. The tech informed me that he would make the call based on whatever else he found in the tank.
At this time the tech walked me around the side of my house shook me down for a private Cash tip laying out a quid pro quo that in exchange for a sum of cash he would overlook the the water in the hole, despite that might case his truck to overfill. I want to reiterate at this point we are specking of 15 gallons of water. I said nothing because i wanted to see how this played out. I figured for an extra 40 bucks I could get my tank done at that moment and get on with my life. Better to deal with the devil you know...
Upon digging a second hole they sucked the mess and water out of the tank leaving a great deal of sediment on the bottom of the tank. They insisted that the sediment was necessary to keep bacteria in the tank. I know this to be untrue because the whole point of emptying the tank is to rid your tank of the sludge and the sediment!
The tech asked us to turn on our hot water to help flush out the clean out pipe and as the water flowed he put on a rubber glove and wiped some grease and muck out of the pipe. In fairness he did offer to let me scoop out the grease but I had a plans with some out of town guests for lunch ans everyone was waiting for me so i asked him to do it. The wipe out took approx 30 seconds.
In the end I received my bill for $189 plus 200 dollars for a total of $389. he informed me that this would cover the extra water and the wiping out of the pipe. I made good on my 40 dollar cash tip to the tech who introduced the quid pro quo and a 10 dollar tip to the tech who actually wiped out that pipe for half a minute.
I am irritated that i was taken for the extra $200 but did not want to cause a scene in front of my wife, kids, and out of town guests. As the tech gleefully took my $389 he informed me that he had done me a really big favor because he gets a percentage of anything over the $189 they advertise.
These guys are not professionals. They have a good receptionist, a decent website and an expensive truck but this a professional does not make. I would not feel comfortable suggesting anyone use Mr. Septic or Rooter Express Plumbing Services. Let my $200 over payment and 50 dollar tip serve as a warning. If anyone thinks I'm exaggerating take a look at my other reviews. As a small business owner myself we live and die by these feedback's. I can be reached at 404 992 1124 if anyone would like more information about this experience.
