Our icemaker in a Samsung refrigerator broke because it overfilled the tray
and caused some plastic parts to break. I disassembled it and removed
it from the freezer compartment, thinking we could live without it.
However this was not a satisfactory solution, because it upset
the normal flow of control in the refrigerator. After that, whenever
there was a power outage, the cooling of both freezer and refrigerator
turned off and the temperature readout showed only a colon (:). If we
did not notice this right away the temperatures in both freezer and
refrigerator climbed much too high.
We could reboot the computer by holding in the two buttons Power
Freeze and Power Cool for ten seconds, and then it returned to normal.
But for a long-term solution we had to get a new icemaker.
On May 1, 2014 a technician, Kevin, from Right Choice Appliance Repair
replaced the icemaker. It checked out all right at the time. However we
soon discovered that the ice dumped into the bucket and froze there into
one solid mass, which had never happened before.
On May 15 Kevin returned and was concerned that maybe the fan
in the freezer did not turn on when the compressor was running and the
door was closed (or the button held in). He did something, and when he
left the fan worked, and continues to work today.
However that did not solve the problem of the ice cubes freezing together in the bucket.
I had one conversation with a manager at Right Choice who said she would
contact Samsung about this, but I have not heard anything back from her.
I have left numerous messages asking for a return call but have not had
one.
Because the new icemaker has a tray that makes ice cubes that
are twice as big as were made by the original, it is possible that they
are dumped out before they have fully frozen, and because they are still
wet, freeze together. This may or may not explain the problem. If it is
the problem replacing the new tray with one like the old one might
solve the problem.
I would like to be contacted by Right Choice and have the icemaker adjusted or replaced.
