The driver (who said he was also the owner as he recently bought out the company) did not clean out my septic tank properly. I used to pump out tanks growing up in another state and we cleaned out tanks rather than do what this guy did.
All he did was pull out a large PVC pipe attached to his hoses and drop it in the bottom of the tank. Then he started up the pump and pumped out the liquids only then packed up in no time saying he was finished. He left all the solids untouched. It is the SOLIDS that cause all the septic problems. The liquids are not the problem since they are able to be handled in the leech field.
If he did not pump out the solids then that leaves, potentially, feet of solids untouched and then a more difficult pumping the next time when you call someone who does not rip you off.
I stood there while he was pumping and I told him I pumped out tanks years ago and he still pulled his PVC TRICK on me. I paid him knowing I was never calling him again.
The price was NOT reasonable for pumping out ONLY liquids as that is only half the job.
As a former professional who pumped out septic tanks in the 80s-90s (Black Forest Septic Service, out of business now so Angies list can leave it there(was also owned by my parents)) the proper method is to pump off all the solids in the beginning while they are on top and alternate solid to liquid until all the solids are gone. A good professional will use a tool like a shovel to draw more solids into the suction. When the liquids are gone the professional should be working the hose to make sure he gets solids on the bottom that were not floating in the beginning. If the solids are difficult, then they will pump out liquids and backwash it back into your tank to break up the solids and make things more manageable. When the job is finished there should be at least SOME concrete visible on the bottom or close to it. The homeowner can use a shovel and reach down into the hole and tap the metal shovel tip on the bottom to gauge how much solids are there. Charging extra to dig up the hole is normal. And charging even more for deep holes is normal as well as offering to install a riser so future digging is not so difficult.
