The first part was the design, which was done by Ray Good.  After multiple (over 4) redraws due to measurement errors which I caught, we finally got a drawing.  Demolition began and as they removed floor tile with a sledge hammer, they knocked out several plaster screw covers in the kitchen below.  One of the plumbing fixtures leaked and required a bucket.  Unknown to me, they left it that way for the weekend and it overflowed, leaving stains on the kitchen ceiling. I provide this detail to give you an example of how things went from there.  It was mistake after mistake, sloppy work, and redoing painting, trim, and numerous other things that made the estimated 2 month project a 4+ month project.
I work at home, and thank goodness for that, as I caught more mistakes, provided more guidance, and had to remind them constantly about design decisions.  The owner was a "no-show" for the last month and a half.  There were no formal change orders, but he did send me a final bill that added over $2800 in costs for those changes.  The most egresses being $785 to repaint the kitchen ceiling.  And after all the errors I caught that saved him time and money, he charged me $95 to have an electrician come back to move fixture boxes over (there were no additional materials needed).

From the time we first hired them in 2010, to this project, they had changed out many of their subs.  The great trim caprenter was gone, the maticulas painters were gone, and the project lacked proper supervision throughout.  When we expressed our unhappiness about the extra charges and complained about the longer timeframe and mistakes, the response, was, "Yes, but I'm sure you are going to love your new bathroom."  Do contractors not get it that the quality of the work from the customer's standpoint is viewed throughout the project, not just at the end?  My quality rating of "D" is not for the final quality, but for the end-to-end quality of work that was done.

We were very unhappy with the entire experience. Deadlines were not met, phone calls were unanswered, and there were weeks and weeks when no one showed up at the house to do work with no explanation. Estimates were not complete (for example, we were given a price to replace the doors, but we were told after installation that the price had not included prep work or installation -so the builder doubled the price without telling us).   At one time, the builder refused to give us the bill of work up to that date, insisting that we move forward without knowing how much we had spent. The air conditioner system was incorrectly but expensively installed, and we have been sweating this entire summer and will have to pay another company to replace what has been done. We felt that much of the work was inadequate, and much of it had to be redone, at our expense. We would never use this builder again and would not recommend him even to our enemies.
