. They were very unprofessional. They didn't do what we asked them to do.
We are both disabled and I feel that they took advantage of us. We
didn't really have the money to spend, but we needed to have heat and
air. We had asked to have gas back up and they did gas only. and runs
all the time during winter. And the first time we used it, it took over
100gals of gas for one month. We can't even afford to run the darn thing
we paid so much money for.

To keep these idiots from trying ot SUE me for what I feel is nothing but the truth, I will preface this with this legal disclaiimer. The following are my veiws on the work they did, and my opinion as to their professionalism:
What we actually received from Performance H & A:

  1. 1. High efficiency air conditioner (not the heat pump requested) I guess they skimped on the requirements to get the bid.
  2. 2. An over-sized 150,000 BTU high efficiency gas furnace, which runs constantly (not as a backup) ? Contrary to what the company assured me would operate as cheaply as the heat-pump. The heat is totally unusable heat due to excessive cost. Running four low efficiency electric space heaters are almost $350/month cheaper to use at last years gas prices.
  3. 3. Unprofessional, poorly designed layout; Improperly sized duct, which was either not spec'd out correctly or the installers did not follow their specs. Within one room, there are two vents, one of which, blows the curtains and you have to wear a coat in the summertime, while the other vent ten foot away, has less than one half the CFM's in air flow, leaves you burning up (photos). The kitchen, which is a naturally a hard area to heat or cool, has far less air flow than is going to the interior halls (photo). Furthermore, both baths, had to be up-sized by our request before there were any effective cooling & heating in those rooms;
  4. 4. Unprofessional, poor quality installation; The air conditioner main unit was set on leveled ground, which decreases the life of the unit (photo). The duct-work has fallen repeatedly wasting cool air into the crawl space, due to poorly attached or non-existent
  5. strapping of the duct to the floor joist and the joints come apart under the house constantly; Many of the very few straps used had to be replaced by within two months of installation. Almost 20 feet of material is in direct contact with the ground violating manufacturer's specs: Even now, two rooms are not being cooled due to ANOTHER joint coming apart and falling down and yet AGAIN the cool air is being wasted cooling off the crawl space (photos); Left garbage / packing material all around the house; The big awful looking bright white PVC vent came out the front of our Victorian home and I had to force them to redirect it to the rear of the house; The return vents inside of the house had to be redone, due to it being a stumbling hazard ? as the sharp sheet-metal corner of the duct was forcing the return vent off the floor almost an inch;etc. etc.

Summary:

On the day I received the quotation Jim Strauss, the guy giving the quote, assured  us that I did not need a heat-pump to get the same efficiency. That they could install a high efficiency air along with a high efficiency LP gas system that would be as cheap to operate as what I was asking quoted. I was almost made to feel I was sort of stupid for asking for that. After all, with a name like ?Performance? you expect they would know what they are talking about.
He was SOOOO wrong! I have not operated as cheaply as had I gotten the heat pump ... far from it. As soon as they started installing the unit I began to question their ?PERFORMANCE? as well as their truthfulness and professionalism, so I had my son stay under the house to make sure no tools, supplies, etc, we had stored under the house suddenly ?disappeared.?
Performance H & A repaired a few of the items only after I held their payment hostage in exchange for the corrections. Their lack of quality became even noticeable after they left when numerous straps came loose from the floor joist and joint come loose. They had to be recalled to correct these. The heating has not been corrected to-date! I am still unable to use what I expected to have paid for. When we called them voicing our complaints, we were told, that since we supposedly signed some sort of paper saying they were through, they REALLY DON'T CARE!
So we have almost $11 thousand in an "ENERGY EFFICIENT" system, that is only 50% usable, cost 20% per year to operate, which to this day has fallen duct-work blowing cool air out under the house!?!? And all they are willing to do is to connect my duct-work back?
In our last conversation, they implied that we NEVER ask for them to quote on an energy efficient HEAT PUMP ,,, yet I have copies of the other two quotations from companies that were able to understand CLEAR English and gave my quotation on that.
What I took away from this experiencing ... to use a PROFESSIONAL company that shows enough concern about the customers happiness to actually do a good job. I am SURE there are companies out there SOMEWHERE like that!?!?

The guys were awesome, they were on time, polite, effiecent and patient with my dogs that barked at them every time they would see them. The job was completed in less time (by about 2 hours) then I was originally told which was another plus, because they were out of here before the kids got home from school. Everything was set up according to the work order, they showed me how to set the new thermostat, and how things work. They left the areas cleaner then it was before they started. One of the guys actually offered to sweep the kitchen floor after he tracked some dirt in when he came in to run a wire. I am definately going to keep their number around for yearly upkeep, and to pass on to anyone that is looking for a top quality heating and air service company.
