"Thank you, Mr. [Member Name Removed]. It was a pleasure working with you on this project."
"Thank you Ms. [Member Name Removed]. It was a pleasure working with you. Jill Tompkins, VP The Tompkins Company"
I was extremely satisfied with the quality of the new windows and the time frame in which they were installed (only had to take 1 day off work to be at home for the install). I am glad to have my new windows, they look very nice and hopefully will make a difference in my power bills, although I have not seen that reflected in any bills as of yet.
The install crew is apparently contracted out by Tompkins (they just make the windows I guess?), and I was not at all happy with the condition in which they left my house and property. There was broken glass from some of the old windows breaking during removal, both inside my house on the floor and outside in the front and back yard. I found multiple nails in the yard and driveway where I park my car. Also, since the old windows being removed were old enough to have lead paint on them, Mr. Wells gave me a brochure about safe practices for renovating with lead paint when he first came out to give an estimate for the job. Essentially none of these practices were followed by the install crew-- nothing was contained (obviously, since it would have caught the broken glass had it been sealed off like it was supposed to be!) and there were paint chips ALL OVER my house and yard. I recently got a small puppy who tries to eat everything he finds on the ground, so this was a very big problem for me (I do believe the puppy had some symptoms of lead poisoning such as stomach cramping and nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, but the vet said it would probably be a self limiting episode with no long term effects as long as I was able to remove the source of lead from his environment so he was not continually exposed).
So I called the Tompkins company and spoke to Mrs. Tompkins several times. She informed me then that the install crew is contracted out by their company and said she would "talk to" the person who had been in charge of the install at my house. She also put me in touch with a gentleman named Victor who I believe is another contractor they use, and he came out a few days later and did as thorough as possible of a job of cleaning up the mess the other crew had left. I was very pleased with the effort Victor put into trying to clean up my property, but at that point my dogs and myself had been exposed to several days of the environment left by the original crew. They also left the old windows after removing them (both storm windows and wooden windows) leaning against my 6ft wood fence, which is way too much weight to put on such a structure and was causing my fence to sag, so I had to move all of the windows off of it myself, and am glad I did because it was almost a full week later before they came by and finally carted off all the old windows and debris from removing them.
Overall, I thought the condition the install crew left my property in was just absurdly unprofessional. I understand those workers are not directly employed by Tomkins company, but I would have appreciated an offer of discounting the job since it was performed so poorly. Mrs. Tompkins seemed to think that was ridiculous since she said the install crew were just contractors not Tompkins Company employees. The windows themselves are wonderful, I have not had any trouble with them and am quite pleased with the final product. I was also pleased that they were able to install all 11 in one day, but I wouldve preferred it to take longer and have actually done it the right way. I am not sure I would use this company and their contractors (who, in my opinion, they are responsible for and should be accountable for the quality of work done by people they hire out) again in the future due to the problems with cleanup after installing, the failure to follow EPA regulations on containing lead paint renovations, etc. and what I view as a sort of bare minimum done to rectify the situation by sending the gentleman Victor to cleanup after the original crew. That said, I will consider using them again when I get around to replacing the rest of the windows here because they had a good price and good product, and I feel that now I am aware of how the install/removal of old windows should be done and I can make sure I watch what they are doing so I make sure they do it right next time otherwise I will make a stink about it during the fact, not after!
Sales - Hinton Wells was was on time, personable and willing to negotiate.
Management - After Hinton met with us, I had some questions and stopped by their office. Ben Tompkins was very friendly while he called Hinton and gave me a tour of their manufacturing operation.
Installation - Charles and Jo Ann Henderson were very responsive and personable too, came back several times to answer questions, were competent, cleaned up after themselves and defined, "professionalism"
Follow-up - We received our warranty paperwork promptly after the installation was complete.
They did sub-contract out the box window for our kitchen which caused a delay. However, when it was delivered, it did not meet their standards so they, the Tompkins company, built one themselves. This speaks volumes of their reputation.
One of the delay factors was the fact that they had to rely on a sub-contractor to build a box-window that I had requested. After waiting for some time for that window to come in, they were not satisfied with the quality of the finished product. Therefore, they took a little more time to build the box-window themselves and did a fine job. This indicates the high standards that they demand before they put their name on any product.
I would highly recommend the Tompkins Company for any work required.
