We had a wind storm to hit the room a year ago and they had to come back out to repair the roof and just the other day we had a hard rain and there is a leak in the roof. This sun room is only 2 years old. We are still waiting for the repair work to be done. I am sure he will get it repaired. For this room to be only 2 years old I wouldn't expect these things to be happening so soon.
We needed our dining room ceiling and drywall repaired and we wanted ductwork installed to direct our hot moist air from the kitchen and bathroom. Both the kitchen and bathroom already had the vents, so no electrical work was necessary. As we talked, I mentioned that we were remodeling our kitchen and had plans to install vinyl flooring over the unfinished wood floor. I mentioned that I really wanted porcelain tile but that we did not feel that the floor would be sturdy enough for it. Alan immediately told us of the many projects that he had done, amazing us with his supposed vast knowledge, and assuring us that our 90 year-old tongue-in-groove wood subfloors and floor joists would easily hold the weight.
Alan showed us Posey Home Improvement?s general contractor?s license, liability insurance, and A+ BBB accreditation. We explained our past experiences with contractors failing to get proper building permits, poor workmanship, illegal contracts, poor work ethics, and lack of consideration for our property. Alan assured us that he was ?anal?, requiring perfection from his workers.
Below is a succinct but not complete list of our experience with this company:
10/29/2011 - Alan cancelled his meeting to go with us to select porcelain tiles. However, he gave us a price range of $4 to $6. At Carpet Mart on Peach Orchard Road, we found a Mohawk Mandelane ColorBody Porcelain Tile (sage brown) which embodied the color, durability, and slip resistance we desired. Aaron Dobbins said he would sell the tile to Posey Home Improvements at the contractor?s price, which was lower than the price listed on the sample board and within the set price range. We brought the sample board home.
10/31/2011 - We met with Alan and his installer, Mike (do not know last name), who took the sample board with him supposedly to find it at a cheaper price. He was supposed to bring the sample board back that day since it was on loan from Carpet Mart. After we called asking about it for two days, it was left on our front porch on 11/2/2011. When we returned the sample board to Carpet Mart, Aaron told us that Alan had called him trying to get a cheaper price but he was already at the lowest price he could give them. We told him that Alan had called, saying that the tile had been ordered and would be arriving within a week. We also remarked that Alan had also told us he had found the tile elsewhere at a cheaper price. This comment flabbergasted Aaron, who said that there was only one Mohawk representative for the entire CSRA and he knew that he would not sell his product somewhere else at a lower price. He said he was dubious--but we dismissed his remark at the time. The tile came in on 11/11/2011.
11/14/2011 - Mike and Dennis removed everything from our kitchen, then removed the oak floor so backer board and tile would match the height of the current flooring in the rest of the house. During the move, they broke one of the window panes on my back door. The old tongue-in-groove flooring was nailed every 8 inches with old square-headed nails. Instead of removing the nails from the flooring, he drove them in, leaving some sticking up. They saw that I had a large TroyBilt cart in my back yard and asked could they use it to haul away debris. Since the debris was relatively light, I agreed. They returned with my cart overladen with boxes of tiles, a tile saw, and other materials. The tires were completely flattened and my axle is now bent.
The tiles in the cart were not the tile we had selected nor were we aware of the switch until after the kitchen floor was completely bare and our oak floor demolished. When we questioned them, both Alan and Mike told us that the tile was identical to the tile we had selected. Alan even went on to say that its only difference was having a different brand name ? much like Whirlpool and Kenmore products. We no longer had the sample board to compare it with and felt pressured to accept the tile, knowing that we would spend quite a while without the ability to cook, take hot baths, wash dishes, and wash & dry our own clothes at home. We now believe this was a deliberate tactic to force us to accept cheap tile.
Alan initially told us that Mike would use tile spacers to keep the tile grout lines small and uniform. Mike did not use spacers and when I called to ask about it, Alan told me that Mike could not use spacers because our floor was not square or level. We have since contacted a tile expert who has refuted this claim.
Mike left areas in the backer board that were too wide to properly seal the subflooring and did not tape the backer boards together to complete the seal. He also told us we could walk on non-grouted tile after it set. After having problems with tile popping up, we checked the thinset bag ourselves and discovered that this was not recommended. Mike told us we could walk on the grouted floor by mid morning the next day after it was completed, and once again, after having more tile and grout problems, we checked the grout bag ourselves only to find that a minimum 24 hour dry time was recommended before walking on the tile.
Mike and Dennis pulled down the damaged dining room ceiling two days before the drywall experts arrived, leaving a gaping hole in our ceiling during hot weather. They left the back door open during the nearly the entire time while they were working.
11/21/2011 - Mike told Dennis to run the bathroom ductwork. He came down saying that he was too large to fit into the area and that someone smaller would have to do the work. Later, miraculously Dennis was supposedly able to complete the work. After Mike & Dennis had left that day, the vent would not work. I called Alan when I realized this and told him that we were going into the attic to find out why. Alan told us not to worry about it and let Mike handle it the next day. Mike & Dennis returned the following day and went straight to our bathroom. They were able to get the vent to work by adjusting the flapper through our bathroom vent. He told me that the ductwork was too close to the flapper to allow the fan to turn on. I noticed that the outside vent was bent and the hole around it cut unevenly. There were unsightly gaps showing around the vent itself.
Our suspicions aroused, I had my husband get a ladder and feel for air flow while the vent was turned on. There was no air flow. We went into the attic and found the ductwork lying across the vent in such a manner as to appear to be connected from the bathroom below. It was also laid out to appear to be connected to an outside vent. With my video camera recording, I went up the ladder and removed the vent, only to find that it was not connected to any ductwork, the hole had been cut right in the middle of a rafter, and the vent itself had been notched to fit around it. I stuck the camera into the hole and videotaped the entire area. We found no ductwork or hole.
We reviewed our surveillance cameras and found that Dennis had brought no vi
