Workers sanded the floors down and replaced a couple boards that had a large gap between them. They replaced on place of water damage from a door. Somehow they did not replace the damaged boards directly in front of the front door. Some of the gaps were filled in, but others were not. When I asked about the remaining gaps I was told they would be filled in, and that we had a very large number of them. Workers completed three coats of wax/varnish on the top of the floor. We stayed away during this time so as to not walk on the floor and cause damage. When I returned home we noticed that there were still holes that had not been filled in and it did not look very polished or completed at all. I also asked about the damaged floor by the front door and was told it was too late to repair as the coats had already been placed. I called and the same man who did the estimate came out. He went ahead and scheduled a fourth coating to be done. The forth coating was complete and the trim around the baseboards was finished.
I am not completely unhappy with the actual refinishing of the majority of the floors. The things that I was/am unhappy about are:
- The damaged wood by the front door was not replaced and I was told it could not be repaired after the coats of varnish were put down. As professionals I would have assumed this is something they would have spotted and repaired.
- I had to ask for an additional coat to make it even look like the floors had been refinished, it seems that whatever product was used was not very good.
- There are still holes in the floor in a few places that were never filled in.
Our process was not quick, but methodical. Each step took time; the initial look, the estimate, the scheduling of service, the initial call, and so forth. These things happen, on both their end and mine, and seems to just be part of the process. One aspect of the job that may also be standard, but bothered me a bit, was the need to pay for the work upfront. In general, consumer organizations suggest that at least some of the payment should be withheld, for lack of a better term, until the work is done. However, the scope of the work, as well as the ability to pay with a credit card, probably mitigated any real issues.
The first day of work, the company sent a substantial number of people to the house, and could have completed most flooring projects in a day, I suspect, with this group. However, since moisture issues were the primary reason for the need for service (the termites entered the same way water did in that section), all the group could really do was to remove the affected boards in both sections and let them dry over a weekend before more work could be done.
The repair work really could only be done one step at a time, requiring many visits. Each step was quick and efficient, and the personnel generally came on schedule. The gentleman that handled the staining and polyurethane came when he could each day, which in a few cases was the very end of the day, which, given his other work, was probably best for him, and worked well enough for us.
One thing I would like to specifically praise with regard to this process and the company is their willingness to work with me to make sure the job done was to my specifications. After the initial pass through the termite infested area, I studied the boards surrounding those that were removed, and determined that other boards should be removed and replaced. The company did so, no questions asked. Later in the process, I decided that a third coat of polyurethane was needed on the new boards, and this was also done professionally and efficiently.
"Hardwood Floors & More installed these floors for a local builder in May 2009. The member did pay Hardwood Floors and More to upgrade from vinyl to hardwood in the kitchen and breakfast room. A builder's grade hardwood was selected. In November 2009 we repaired the floors due to water damage from the upstairs master bath. We certainly care about each job we do, however we can not warranty hardwood damage due to water, wear and tear, etc."
It is noteworthy that, recently, my family marred the vinyl floor while dragging the Christmas tree across it. I called to have it repaired, because I was worried the breach in the vinyl layer would cause problems. They came out, fixed it, and when I asked how much I owed, was told "Nothing". I reminded them that the nicks were due to US, not them, and they said, "don't worry, we did the installation, and we'll take care of it". It should be mentioned that the repair-man noted a few things that were done improperly during the installation which I was unaware of (seams not sealed, etc), and he fixed those, too. This may be why he did not charge me for repairing the problem my family caused with the floor. Either way, I was very impressed and grateful.
The carpet was installed by the same crew. Again, not overly impressed by the quality of work done by the installers, but that has been compensated for by the customer care.
The tile was installed by a different crew who was clean, efficient, and did quality work. I wish I had asked about tiling the baseboards, because it looks a bit strange the way the tile butts up against my shortened baseboards, but that's due to my lack of experience. I also wish I had asked to see exactly what amount of tile I was charged for-the installers delivered about 3 times the number of boxes that were used, and removed the excess. I just wish, if I paid for those boxes, I could have kept them. I am not certain whether I paid for them, though. Food for thought for next time-I will get things itemized.
I would recommend Hardwood Floors and More to all of my friends. Can't say enough good things about the follow-up customer care.
