We took our dog to Dearborn this afternoon to follow up on the emergency she experienced yesterday. We did not have an appointment, but the Vet who performed the emergency services yesterday had faxed over all of her information. After checking in and waiting over an hour without a word from anyone, we left and took our pet to another Vet who saw us within 10 minutes of our arrival.
Earlier in the week we called about another pet who was very ill. We described her symptoms and our concern over the phone; we were told there were no appointments, but we could walk-in the next day. This pet ended up in the emergency room before 5 pm the same day vomiting blood.
The Vets are professional and dedicated, the care provided is beyond reproach, but the lack of concern and responsiveness of the front office staff and those who answer the phone, as well as delays in accessing care, are unacceptable.
When I brought Lucky in that Monday morning, she was so weak she could hardly lift her head. Dr. Snipes -- a kindly and likeable vet I've always enjoyed -- gave her a thorough exam, including aspirating fluids from her abdomen in two places. There was no blood in the syringe, but the results of her blood tests didn't look good, so we decided to let Lucky stay the night to get some IV fluids and B-12 in her system and reevaluate her in the morning.
Dr. Ellington stopped by the clinic that evening around 7:00 to check on the patients, and after evaluating Lucky some more, she did another abdominal aspiration. This time it was evident the dog was bleeding internally, and the symptoms had become so pronounced Dr. E. could see there was a tumor on her spleen and that it had caused a rupture. She called us right away, saying, in essence, "If you want to see her before the end, you need to come now." We floored it, and she unlocked the doors and let us in.
Lucky had been brought into an exam room, and veterinary assistant Tori (I hope I spelled that right) was with her. I sat on the floor with Lucky and my husband sat in a chair while Dr. E. explained what had happened. It was clear we needed to release Lucky from her suffering, but the vet didn't push us in any way. She just explained, in her forthright but kind manner, what the situation was, and I said I thought it was time.
Tori brought in a fluffy comforter for Lucky to lie on, and a folded towel to pillow her head. Surely Dr. Ellington was tired, and had humans and animals of her own to go home to, but you would have thought there was no other place in this world she needed or wanted to be. She explained the sorts of muscle reactions we might observe after the injection was given, and assured me that Lucky would be feeling no pain. The involuntary nervous system would simply be looking for the oxygen it was no longer getting. She then waited patiently until I gave the signal. Lucky looked up at Dr. Ellington, and I gave the nod, and within seconds my dog had simply ceased being.
We sat there as the vet listened to Lucky's pulse, and then she confirmed that it was over. I asked if anyone had a pair of scissors, and she produced one from her pocket. I clipped a lock of Lucky's fur, and Tori brought a bag to keep it secure for the trip home.
Lucky was the second terminally ill dog Dr. Ellington has cared for and ultimately euthanized for me, and I'm deeply grateful for her skill and compassion. I recommend her services, her clinic, and her boarding facility to anyone, without reservation.
I have been a customer of Dearborn Animal Hospital since 2004. They are a wonderful clinic that has been a part of the Decautr community for decades. They are well known in the area for being one of the most caring vets in the community. Doctor Linda Ellington is one of the best vets I have ever worked with.
