We have a beautiful new bathroom and are pleased with the work ethic and professionalism of all the crews associated with this project. That said, there were a few wrinkles along the way. Most aggravating was at the end, when it came time for the final payment. The contract we had a copy of spelled out what was included and what items we would pay for, or the allowances. The contractor was working from a later contract which we never got a copy of. We don't think this was intentional at all, but the differences had to be ironed out and the cost had to be adjusted. The lesson: Make sure both parties are working from the same contract and EVERYTHING is detailed as to what is done and who pays for what.
The project itself started off early and seemed to move ahead of the scheduled two weeks. At one point, however, there were two crews trying to work in our small bathroom at the same time and neither was happy with the other. As per usual with our 32-year-old house, little things kept cropping up that caused delays, so the project ended up going about a week over estimate. When we thought everything was done, we discovered minor things like a chip in the tub and weak water pressure in the left vanity that Johnny Rhino was quick to send people to repair.
One problem came up with the window. We chose a sliding window from a catalog where the graphic showed lots of glass area and a thin frame. The contractor special-ordered it. Turns out the actual window had lots of frame and little glass area. We ended up buying a completely different window at Home Depot. Lesson: Try to see the actual product before buying it.
The solid-core door is somewhat of a mystery. The contractor charged us $85 for it, then had his crew build a frame for it, which wasn't right at first and had to be adjusted. It looks good but we found later that it doesn't seal closely so a lot of light comes through the edges. We found out they could have bought the solid-core door WITH frame at Home Depot for $10 more than they charged us. Can't figure out why they didn't just do that.
Anyway, we really like the bathroom and wouldn't hesitate to have Johnny Rhino give us a quote for other work. But with them or any other contractor, we will pay close attention to details, from paperwork to product to final workmanship.
