I've waited a week, have just inspected the joints, and not a drop of leakage. So, it's time for this report. Sunday, May 15th I entered my crawl space to do a simple chore, replace the main water filter and the filter to my air conditioning unit as I have done many times over the years. On this occasion, the housing to the filter would not rotate with the plastic wrench specially designed for this purpose. Obtained a sledge hammer to strike the wrench handle to dislodge the housing; the filter unit rotated on its axis with the copper pipe and leaks appeared on both connections to the water filter plus the cut-off valve near the inside wall. Over the course of 3 days made half-a-dozen trips to Lowe's to purchase replacement parts (a total of $95.82) to, first, try to repair the section either side of the filter unit but, when that failed time and again, threw away the water filter and bought another new pipe length and a new cutoff valve to run the water without the filter unit. Solder would not "sweat" to the joints no matter how much heat and length of time was applied to the joints. The water had been shut off at the street but, I could never stop the water trickling out the pipe from the house (Yes, I had previously opened the lines to release the pressure draining water for a while before turning the taps off to, hopefully, prevent water from draining towards the work area.) and water acts like a superb "heat sink" drawing away the heat from the portion of the pipe I was trying to heat up to accept the solder. Three days without water creates havoc for modern man in modern homes; I leave it to your imagination. If I made one trip to/from the work area in my crawl space, I made a couple-a-hundred. My 61-year-old knees, joints, and muscles are not used to "duck-walking" and, thank goodness I have a hard head, my head should have lumps from the head-banging I experienced with pipes and floor trusses. Frustration and anger were running fever-pitched with me. On the third day I experienced an epiphany. What the h*** was I doing? It was never my intent to become a plumber! I just wanted to replace a water filter and, suddenly, found myself getting deeper and deeper into an area I had no business or experience in. With that realization I said, "Enough, is enough." and called the good guys at RPand D. They came over during their lunch hour, that day, and quickly made the repair. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have called them when the first leak developed. Five (5) years of no problems with the water filter and, now, this. What lesson did I lean? Stupid is as stupid does. I should also mention that before RPand D left, they fixed a leakage to my water heater ... with a pair of pliers. The packing nut was loose. Jeesh!
