I called Chambliss Construction at 6:00 PM on the 27th of Dec. and left a voicemail. My call was returned within minutes by a secretary (I think this was Tommy Chambliss's mom) asking what time the next day would be convenient for Tommy to call. When I spoke with Tommy the next day, I explained my issues with the odors. He explained that odors could be a septic problem but not necessarily. He also told me that the State of Georgia recommends tanks being pumped every 5 years for a family of 4 (we have 5) and that garbage disposals can accelerate this time frame (we have one). He quoted a price of $350 for a basic pump out and more if something else was wrong like a broken filter or heavy roots. I asked him to come by figuring at the very least my tank was due for a pump out. He said he would be at my house between 8:30 and 9:00 AM the next morning.
Tommy and one assistants arrived a few minutes to 9:00. I had a good idea of where my tank was so locating only took a few minutes. Tommy used a probing rod to locate the edges of the tank and then marked two points on the ground where each of the access manholes would be. Apparently new tanks have two chambers and both have to be pumped out. They cut my sod with a shovel and laid it back. They then placed the excavated dirt on a tarp. The first manhole was about 30-inches deep and the second about 12-inches.
When the first lid was removed it was filled to the top. Tommy told me it was one of his top 10 for the year with the amount of crud in there. Diaper wipes and septic tanks do not mix. We have three kids under 7 and as careful as I thought I was in insisting that wipes go in the trash, apparently a few hundred slipped by me in 7 years.
The pumper truck had a 100 foot hose, so they were able to park in my driveway and pull the hose through the fence. Pumping took about 20 minutes. (Diaper wipes slow the process down).
They inspected my filter and said it looked good and was installed level. It did have some paint on it. (Don't wash paint brushes in the house if you have a septic system - it is bad on the filter.)
They replaced the lids, filled the holes and replaced the sod. Outside of a few Georgia Red Clay stains on the grass, you cannot tell they were even there.
Afterwards, Tommy went over some maintenance tips - no diaper wipes, no paint, limit what you put in the garbage disposal, etc. He also gave me the name of a plumber that was good at tracking odors in case the septic pump-out did not reduce the odors.
The time between when he arrived and I wrote the check was less than an hour.
I was very pleased.
"I do apologize that this customer was not satisfied with our services. We are a family business and we strive to have a good reputation. Our prices are usually in line with other contractors. A simple phone call and any mess left by us would have been corrected. As a rule when our company leaves a job site you can hardly tell we were there."
"Just a quick note on the oil leaking in the driveway, a tarp is placed under the truck now to prevent that. We apologize."
