When one thinks of what an ideal building contractor would be, several things come to mind. Someone who is experienced, honest, punctual, responsible, meticulous, a great craftsman, flexible, creative in their approach to problem solving, a good communicator and a skilled builder whose pride is reflected in their excellent work.  One  hopes and prays that their contractor has at least half these qualities. The Holcomb brothers and their father had them all.  They were a throwback to another era when determination in one's work and pride in one's craft held sway. Our next door neighbor had recommended the Holcombs on the strength of a mutual friend's positive experience with their services.  Our initial meeting in late October, gave us an inkling of how things would go.  We were expecting our entire family for Christmas. The Holcombs were honest about what could be accomplished by our Christmas deadline and completed satisfactorily.  They listened carefully to our immediate needs and suggested building an outside enclosed staircase with 2 windows and a door to the attic.  They guaranteed it would be finished before Christmas.  Their payment plan was as follows:  Instead of giving a fixed estimate (and hoping there  were no overruns), they asked that each of them be paid $25 an hour for their time.  Payment to be made at the end of every week with an accounting for materials (backed up by receipts).  This worked out perfectly.  They were always punctual, working from 8 am to 5 pm everyday with a half hour break for lunch.  With any questions or decisions they always made sure everyone was on the same page.  They were respectful of our daily life details.  For example cordoning off their work area with plastic sheeting and making sure their equipment trailer was parked so it didn't inconvenience us.  They were also resourceful in a creative way, solving seemingly unsolvable situations with an excellent outcome while still building to code.  After the carpet man measured the staircase for carpeting he remarked,"You know I'm a pretty hefty person (he weighed 270 plus pounds) but I've never gone up stairs that don't creak.  These stairs don't make a sound.  Who built these stairs?"  Towards the renovation's end we decided to add a half bath to the attic.   The Holcombs had other jobs pending so we asked them to recommend someone for that project.  Instead, they said they'd be happy to do it because they were committed to completing what we wanted and would finish the job properly to our satisfaction.  They did an excellent job and finished everything a week early!  After the job was over, all scrap materials were hauled away and the site cleaned up.  What a pleasure and relief to work with people who shared the same high standards and ethics we also valued.  Because the Holcomb brothers are in such demand, they require many months notice.  But when they do a job, they do it right.
