Mr. Willis spent a lot of time telling me how difficult the job was and standing around with his shovel, doing not much. Meanwhile, I was paying him by the hour! He also complained numerous times that the septic tank company he normally works with would not have left the electrical connection buried. He also criticized other things my septic company had done. I felt he was needlessly negative and greatly added to my stress about the overall job.
I called my husband (who had supervised the septic work) and the septic tank company to see where they thought we should dig. Mr. Willis wouldn't listen what they told me, but just dug wherever he wanted. At that point, I wish I had asked him what I owed him so far and sent him on his way. Due to pressure to get the job finished that day, I ended up getting out a shovel myself, and digging too.
He was too afraid to dig in one of the areas I had pointed out because he was convinced those wires were from an old sprinkler system (and he'd cut them with his shovel, then get stuck splicing them back together on his dime). I had to get my gardening gloves and dig with my small gardening tools around the wires, pulling them gently out, before he would admit that those were the right wires after all. This is not really what you want to do after you have hired someone to do a job and are paying him $75 an hour.
I expected a bit of a break when I went to pay up--after all, I was out there working alongside him, and ultimately, I was the one who located the connection. All he offered was no charge for travel. This was the first time I had heard anything about any travel charges, by the way!! So I was less than impressed.
I paid him for three hours of work--I'd say at least an hour to an hour and a half was wasted on digging holes in the wrong spot.
I imagine my situation is unique--I foolishly went with an old recommendation from a different septic tank company than I had used this time around. I imagine he'd be fine if paired with that company.
However, I will say that this experience showed that this contractor can have difficulty if he runs into non-electrical problems during a job. I think he'd be fine for your straightforward, in the house, electrical issues and upgrades. But if it comes to any complicated challenges, you may want to look elsewhere. Especially since you are paying him by the hour!
The job went well. Power was off for a minimum amount of time as he had said.
We verified all circuits could be powered from the generator.
Jamie cleaned up the work area at the end.
He ask what I was needing done and I told him.
He gave me a idea of the cost which I appreciated, no surprises.
He communicated very well between setting up a time as to where it was not raining for the outside lights.
He came on a Saturday which was very nice since I work.
He called the night before to confirm the time of his arrival and he was on time!
I would recommend him over and over again.
Great work and the pricing was great also.
