Last week, my cat suddenly had a bloated stomach/abdomen and I took her to the emergency vet clinic late Saturday night. She has always had issues with hairballs and I hoped that maybe she had a blockage causing the swelling. Instead, I learned that she had a horrible disease called Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) and the bloated abdomen was caused fluid building up. There is no treatment and it is always terminal, usually within a few weeks of diagnosis.
Needless to say, I was devastated and didn't know what to do next. I sent an email to the main Ball Ground Animal Hospital email address on Sunday afternoon explaining what was going on and that I wanted to do what was best for my cat. I also said that I wanted to put her to sleep if that was the most loving thing I could do for her. I expected to get a response on Monday morning after they opened at 9am.
Dr. Forsyth returned my email on Sunday evening and wanted to make my kitty wasn't having difficulty breathing and that she was still eating and drinking. If so, it would fine to wait until Monday morning to bring her. But if she was suffering, Dr. Forsyth said she would meet me on Sunday night to put her to sleep! I was touched by her offer and her genuine concern for my beloved pet.
The following morning, I called and asked what time they could work me in. They said that they would do whatever they needed to do to accommodate us immediately when we got there. I arrived about an hour later and we went directly into an exam room. Dr. Forsyth did a quick exam and confirmed that it was very likely FIP, but even if it wasn't, the alternatives were various organ failure and just as dire. She reassured me that putting her to sleep was the most loving thing I could do for my girl.
Dr. Forsyth was very kind and compassionate while explaining the procedure and asking whether I wanted to be present until the end. I told her I wouldn't leave until she confirmed that my kitty was gone. She petted and talked to her while she administered the injections....and I didn't take my hand off of her until she was gone.
Afterward, Dr. Forsyth and the other office staff were all very sweet and consoling. As I was leaving with tears in my eyes, Dr. Forsyth gave me a hug and told me one more time that I did the most loving thing for my kitty, even though it broke my heart to do it.
I have never had a vet as wonderful as Dr. Forsyth and her hubby, Dr. Gerlach. I have referred numerous friends and family members and will do so even more emphatically now! If you love your animals as much as I do and you only want to best for them, these two are the BEST!!!
