Read the contract. It makes you, the homeowner, responsible for everything that might go wrong. And there is a section in the contract that says, "the perfect house cannot be built." Do not construe this to refer to the usual concession to the impossibility of human perfection. It's an excuse for incompetence, shoddy workmanship, cheap material, lack of attention to detail, endangerment, violation of county codes, over cost, failure to keep the building schedule and almost anything else you can think of.
Nothing was done according to schedule. Work often went to the cheapest sub-contractor without regard to quality. Septic tank was built without permit. Water was left under the house for weeks at a time. French drain was inadequate and I had to $3000,00 extra to get it redone. Water was taken out of the county into another state to be tested. Contractor wanted to put a 2.5 ton unit in a 2500 sg. foot house. A 220 hot line-wire was left unattended with open ends to the house for a whole day. Ceilings were awful and had to be redone (but not well) but contractor refused to do them all and cement-concrete was just as bad. Had to ask, beg, grovel to get things done and finally hired a lawyer. Corporate office was absolutely unresponsive.
Got proof of every claim.
Hire them and then get yourself a good lawyer.
