Response to A&D Carpet Inc Response Feb 8, 2013. I placed the incorrect date on the list; the job was completed in 2006. Mohawk hardwood was installed on the entire bottom half of my house and carpet upstairs. I tried relentlessly to get the matter resolved by speaking to the fathe, who helped install the flooring. After I reported the stain, the father came out ot look at the refrigerator and stated that stain on the refrigerator was not from the glue that they use. No one else had been in my house moving the "less than a month old" refrigerator and the stains were not on the refrigerator at the start of the job. The bottom line is I tried to clear the matter up with the father because he was in the house with the two young men, but after about 3 weeks, the father started avoidiing me and on the final call to the business, the receptionist informed me that the father was out of town. That day as I drove back to work, I saw the father outside of the business standing near a dark colored truck. So, the company's and the father's integrity became questionable. I went to seek legal advice on this matter but decided not to pursue legal channels because of additional financial obligations I would incur. I can prove that the refrigerator was new, that A&D installed hardwood in my kitchen, I sought legal advice, and that other floor is separting. I would never state things about a company if they were not true--my integrity will not allow me to do so.
"We have no record of completing a flooring installation for Member in 2012. We are requesting a confirmation of this review by Angie's List. In addition, we will review records prior to system changings in order to find information regarding this customer. We will pursue this matter to determine if Member is a previous customer by reviewing archived files. However, we have no Member in our computer system as far back as 2008. We are committed to exceeding our customers expectations. We do strive on word of mouth business and it is our goal to service all our previous customers to the best of our ability. No matter the age of the installation will provide service for anything we installed at anytime. We will do so at no charge for anything that is installation related and will service non installation related repairs for a small fee. If we installed Member's and if she called with any problems we would have scheduled an appointment no questions asked. I am baffled by the glue on the fridge regardless of who installed the flooring. It is not possible to install hardwood underneath a fridge without removing the fridge to another area. The fridge remains out of the area during the installation process. Once it is returned the wood has been installed and therefore adhesive is no longer present. However, in addition, a solvent will remove the adhesive we use. If our adhesive had some how gotten on the fridge, we could have scheduled an installer to remove it with solvent."
There are no examples of their product at the store if you choose to have the wood sanded and stained on site. We tried very hard to and quot;seeand quot; what the final product would look like. I was finally able to have a representative show me similar quality oak from a pre-finished manufacturer. What was installed looked totally different.
We decided on a number 2 common oak, based on feedback from David and a sales person, because we wanted variations in the color and grain. We did NOT want knot holes, and were concerned about knot holes because another sales person mentioned we would get knot holes if we went with that choice. David stated over and over that they PULL the wood with knot holes and don't install it. My first mistake was believing that statement, and the statements made during the next 6 or so conversations with the company about the knot holes.
To make a very very long story shorter, the wood was delivered the day before the install...full of knot holes. I immediately called the office, expressed my concern, and was told the pieces with knot holes would not be installed. I could see right through many of the pieces of wood due to the size of the holes. I was told and quot;knot holes will be pulled, not installedand quot; numerous times. Unfortunately, the knot holes got installed-but it was MY FAULT for not stopping the work.
Oh how I wish I had them put in writing what they promised, because the problem was blamed on ME for trusting their numerous professionals, and ordering the wrong thing---even though I had approximately 7 conversations with their employees of every level about our concerns before the order was placed, immediately after the wood was delivered, right before the wood was installed, and right before the wood was stained.
After several conversations, which became heated, we agreed that I would pay for new wood and they would remove the first floor, re-install, and stain and finish a higher grade of oak flooring. This would split the burden, and allow us to have a floor that did not have numerous quarter-sized putty-filled knot holes throughout.
The second installation went better, because I sat right next to the installers and told them what NOT to install. The final product was beautiful. I was clearly instructed to put EVERYTHING in WRITING, even the slightest concern, during this process so at the end of the job I noted a few very minor concerns. I turned my back on the installers, sanders, stainers at the end of the job and they decided to try to fix the minor concerns and accidentally put down a semi-gloss finish rather than satin in the areas they touched up. This left me with a polka-dotted floor (satin polka-dotted with semi-gloss). After a few emails, they admitted their mistake, told me they had to come out immediately to sand off the semi-gloss spots and re-seal with satin. Their first available time for this immediate repair was 7 days away. The repair did not work, and 8 weeks later (my required waiting period) Becky came back to inspect their repair of their mistake. They gave me numerous stipulations for what, legally, they were required to repair. The shiny spots had to be and quot;visible at standing height in natural lightand quot;---the shiny spots THEY put on my satin floor. Luckily, the botch-job was thorough enough that spots were visible, which forced Aand D to be required to fix them.
The proposed fix was for them to screen the entire floor and re-apply the finish coat. This, again, became disastrous because they decided that screening the entire floor and re-finishing could be accomplished without removing the quarter rounds. I was told over and over that the quarter rounds could stay, even though the ENTIRE surface was being adjusted. Finally, the only way I could force them to remove the quarter rounds and do the job completely was to change the entire gloss-level of the floor. It turns out that was a good thing, because even after the floor was screened, the shiny spots were quite visible in the floor.
I now have a beautiful, semi-gloss floor. However, it cost me 50% more than I think it should have, it cost me a week in vacation time so I could be present during the numerous visits, and it cost me additional money to have my furniture removed from the room 3 times.
If you are still reading this long list of complex mishaps filled with excuses from the vendor....I suggest you do NOT use Aand D for hardwood flooring. I was so relieved when they left my house the last time. It felt like a boulder had been lifted from my shoulders. No more arguing, no more personal insults being hurled at me, no more anything with Aand D. The story is so complicated and full of twists, that my head has been spinning for the past year as I have dealt with them. I am so glad it is over.
"There are some customers that we admit we are unable to satisfy no matter how we try. I can say we tried with every effort to satisfy this customer despite the continued misunderstandings regarding the grade of wood she selected. It is our preference not sell No 2 common hardwood and our concerns were clearly stated regarding this grade of wood. The wood flooring once installed was lived on for 7 days prior to sanding and refinishing. Upon completion of the sanding and refinishing she decided to notify us that she was unhappy with the grade of wood SHE selected. She disputed the credit card charges and had the charges removed from her credit. We as a company were able to successfully show Discover Card that we did meet the terms of her signed agreement. She had even signed stating her satisfaction with the performance after we completed the wood refinishing. Discover Card reinstated the charges to her account. Remember she lived on the installed wood for 7 days prior to us staining and finishing this number 2 common. She then signed signed a completed invoice stating her satisfaction with the COMPLETED work. Yet, even after disputing the complaint with Discover Card we agreed to remove the number 2 common, install number 1 common and sand and finish the hardwood at no charge. She would simply have to purchase the number 1 common at her expense. More than reasonable because as I stated Discover Card fully agreed that she had no right to any compensation because we did meet the terms of our agreement. Upon completion of the second installation and the sand and finish the technician was notified that she could see dog hair and dust in her finish. With any site finished wood flooring, it is possible for anything in the air to get trapped in the finish prior to it drying. Our technician instead of leaving it in the finish tried to remove it. This is once again above and beyond as we have no control over what is airborn within a home. The technician did apply the wrong finish to the touch-up areas. The technician admitted the wrong finish was applied and the customer was notified by us. We fully disclosed that the wrong finish was applied to the touch-up areas and stated we needed to screen and recoat the floor to correct the problem. We fully admit that there are times we do make mistakes. We are fully human. However, we are totally committed to the finished product. We do go above and beyond and did with this customer as well. We were not obligated in anyway to remove, install or refinish the number 2 common as that was the floor she selected. It was even recommended by her husband to purchase number 1 common initially. It is unfortunate that Angie's List will not allow us to post pictures of the finished wood floor. We have pictures of the completed number 2 and Number 1 common installed in this home. Both floors are absolutely beautiful and the pictures validated our position. Better yet, go to her home and look at the completed workmanship. We installed, stained and refinished 2 floors for a grand total of $1140.00. I don't think anyone else would provide this much work for only $1140. However, we did this in an attempt to satisfy a customer. If you are looking for a perfect company we are not the company for you. If you are looking for someone to insure you are satisfied with your purchase after the installation is complete, then come see us."
Buying carpet from Aand D was a good experience, start to finish. Our sales person was very helpful, knowledgeable and kind.
The selection was great and the price was reasonable. The installation crew was professional and respectful. The carpeting looks fine. Our Aand D 'MLK Day' sale price was lower than the other local carpet retailers we visited. We left a local home Improvement store just confused, even though we paid them 35 bucks for the estimate. (Aand D's estimate was free)
