Tony is very nice and is always trying to make sure he does what you want. He moves quickly but with consideration.

"It has been a pleasure working with you [removed member name]. You have a very beautiful yard and proud to have to opportunity to maintain it. Don't ever hesitate to speak your mind to me if my worker do a less than satisfactory job as I am sure we can fix any problems that arise. To Angie's List members: As we are expanding in the growth of our business, I will be slowly removing myself from the manual labor part of job and focusing more on customer service/communications (except in spring March through June in peak season, I will be laboring and answering phones). Recently I have hired a trustworthy employee/laborer who I am getting positive feedback on. Good labor does not come with cheap pay as I learned. If you are looking for quality work with attention to detail, please ask me about my A+ guy. I have another employee too who has a great work ethic and integrity but just a little less experienced in some aspects of landscaping-request this guy if you are looking for more affordable price and not too much detail. In this case, your situation may be you have a rental property that is overgrown and just need it cut so the neighbors will get off your case or the city may of left you a notice of a citation if not taken care of in a few days."

The hardest part was connecting with the provider. Their preference is texting and my old phone isn't well suited for that. Once we connected a workman came over and completed the job with no problems.

"Hi [member name removed], thank you for your feedback of our service as we strive for continuous improvement in the way we operate. I am taking note to call you from now on to avoid you the trouble of texting. I personally prefer texting because it documents info in writing such as people's addresses when I'm on a job when I don't have a notepad or pen handy. We also pride ourselves in putting our conversations in writing so you can hold us accountable for what we say-- kind of like a contract since it is linked to our number. In addition, I find that texting is faster and more efficient. On the other hand, we are growing company experience a few growing pains and may consider hiring a receptionist/secretary to answer phone and take down quote info. For now utilizing technology has helped us reduce cost and maximize efficiency; as a result, we can provide a competitive price for customer. Call or email me when you are ready for next round of service. We probably could do it for $50 or $60 next round assuming the yard is not as overgrown as the first service call."

Tony was very helpful in getting the yard cleaned up, then reminds me when it's probably time to cut the grass again.

We are very pleased with the results. The workers were professional and did a great job. The work did not take longer than anticipated.
The sales manager who gave us a quote was somewhat challenging in negotiating the contract. We consulted the office staff several times before the contract was ready.
As part of the contract, removing a stone wall was included. On day two of the job, the sales manager contacted us and told us that his boss had and quot;chewed him outand quot; for promising to remove the stone wall. The sales manager was passive-aggressive and complained that this removal was very difficult. We felt that it was unprofessional and inappropriate for the sales manager to call us at all. This work had been specifically negotiated. We emphasized that First Fence needed to honor the contract. The sales manager told us he would and quot;figure it out,and quot; and then called at the end of the day to say that he had removed rock for four hours. Again, disappointing and unprofessional.
After the job was complete, we called First Fence to make them aware that the sales manager contacted us as he did. It was apparent that the office staff had no idea this had taken place and asked permission to share with the general manager and the owner of the company to which we agreed.

"Thanks for sharing experience. We are striving to improve customer service and efficiency in the areas you mentioned."

The company we were using to treat our lawn spread it with a chemical that destroyed a lot of the grass. Sod was not required for the entire lawn - only a portion. After checking Angie's list, I found a review for Curb Appeal Landscaping and the member's problem was the same as mine (he only needed sod for a portion of his lawn) His comments about Curb Appeal were that the company gave him a fair price for the partial installation whereas other companies quoted prices that were "out of the ballpark." He also commented that the work was completed to his satisfaction. Based on that review, I called Curb Appeal - along with 3 other companies. Tony (from Curb Appeal) answered the telephone on the first call; with the others I left messages but never heard back. Tony came by my house, gave me a quote, explained what he would do and when he could perform the work. His price was reasonable for the amount of sod/installation required so I gave him the okay to complete the job. We purchased Zoysia and Tony bought the sod at a very competitive price (I compared it to sod being sold by other nurseries). Tony also trimmed a tree in one area that was blocking the sun and did a nice job shaping it. The sod he purchased and installed has done very well and looks beautiful. I mentioned the review on Angie's list to Tony and told him the other property owner commented that Curb Appeal gave him its best price upfront. Tony told me that is always his intent. I am planning to use him next year to add new sod on the remainder of my yard.
Response from Curb Appeal Landscaping and Lawncare
"Happy to hear the sod installation from a year ago is doing well. Thanks for calling us back to install 7 more pallets of emerald zoysia a few months ago. Let me know how that holds out in the long term."

This was a great experience and I am very pleased. I would certainly recommend Tony (in fact, I have already recommended him to some friends). That's the short story.

Here is the long story.

I wanted to sod a limited area of my yard so I called a recommended landscape company and got a quote. It was over $1,800, which struck me as very high. I knew that this estimate was way out of proportion to what my friends have paid in the past. Therefore, I called another recommended landscape company and I got another quote, which came in at $2,400 ( ! ). Now, please understand that we are talking about 1,500 sq ft of sod at the absolute maximum and, in reality, less than that. When you get a $2,400 quote for something like that, the service provider is really saying to you and quot;I don't want to do the job.and quot; I was pretty disgusted at this point, so I searched Angie's List and the internet and found a few other possibilities. I liked what I read about and quot;Curb Appealand quot; (to avoid confusion with other providers that have similar names, Tony Daniel is the guy's name), so I called them.

Tony was very responsive and very on top of things. His pricing, by the pallet, with small extra costs for sod rollers and a few other things like that, if you need them, is very easy to understand. I liked the fact that his numbers had a basis in reality - i.e., they were related to the number of pallets of sod that I needed, unlike these other guys who just seemed to be pulling random numbers out of the air. He isn't a big company, so I had to call the sod grower and pay for the materials directly, but that wasn't a problem - they took a credit card over the phone and everything showed up exactly on time.

Tony showed up the day before to do the prep work and on the day of the work he showed up on time (actually, he was early) and worked throughout the day in drizzle. He followed all of my instructions, interacted with my sprinkler guy and just generally did a great job. And my total cost was less than half of the highest quote that I had gotten, and almost 40% less than the first quote I had gotten. Bottom line is that he was exactly what I was looking for - a guy who knows how to install sod and who isn't looking to rip you off in the process.
Response from Curb Appeal Landscaping and Lawncare
"Thanks for taking the time to write such a thorough feedback of your experience. Sod installation is what we specialize in. I hope the grass is holding out well. We are always exploring ways to increase the speed of our work while improving the quality of our work. So far in the 2014 season, we are proud to say we didn't have to call the sod farm to replace and bad pieces that didn't take. The sod farm usually has about a 30 day guarantee of green fresh sod upon delivery. If there are any bad pieces upon delivery we will take pictures of it to inform sod farm. Sometimes if we can give it time to make a recovery it will turn green again-- assuming you are following water/ schedule, The catch to the sod farms replacement policy is the replacement pieces are free but one of us has to drive to Cartersville, Forest Park, or Whitesville to pick up the replacement pieces and doing the labor to replace the bad sod. In other words, my labor to replace any bad sod is not free but the cost of the sod is. I could offer a free follow up and labor if we agree to it as part of the deal prior to sod installation. To all the potential customers looking for a quote-- you can help save costs and speed up the process if you can measure the square footage of where you want sod. In turn, we can give you an immediate quote based on square footage. I understand you probably want us to drive out there and see area to determine firm quote but a square footage quote will at least let you determine if our sod install services meet your budget. In the hundred on sod jobs we did, 9 times out of 10 our square footage quote, assuming your measurements are right, are accurate to the in person quote. You can also text us pictures of terrain to determine if there are any special situations that would change the quote-- such as a tree stump that has to be removed or major grading requiring a bobcat to move a lot of dirt. I understand people want us to quote the traditional way but we are limited on how far out of town we will drive if we feel the customer is just shopping around or not too serious about having the job done. This applies especially in peak season between March and June. Again, this approach is to cut costs and work efficiently. Gas is a costly expense, and this is our way of pre-qualifying you before wasting each others time. We will usually drive out to firm up the quote, once you confirm that our square footage quote works for you. Get ready for fall and winter weather sod installation- by choosing fescue this time of year. Fescue thrives in the cold weather and will give yard a lush green look in winter while most other plant life is dead."
