This move was a comedy of errors from beginning to end. Atlantic Relocation Systems failed to follow through on what was said concerning price, scheduling, and performance. And untrained chimpanzees could have done a better job of packing. If you have a choice between using Atlantic for your move or shooting yourself in the head, choose the latter?you?ll thank me for it. Here unfolds my tale of woe?
The before we were to pack up, we had 3? of snow which (being the South) stopped the earth?s rotation and delayed the packers who were afraid of getting stuck in the snow and having to resort to cannibalism. But they assured us they?d be there first thing the next morning and they could pack and load us in one day. Well?
First thing wound up being about 10:30 am with a truck about the size of the U-haul I had rented 2 days before?obviously too small. But I hoped that these guys were professionals and knew what they were doing. Doh! About 7:30 pm they realized that it wasn?t all going to fit. However, they promised a truck would be there at 6:30 am the next day to get the rest and both would be consolidated at the warehouse (tripling our risk of damage and/or loss for no additional charge?what a deal!). Well?
About 9:00 am the next day the same guys show up and load up the rest. They said that dispatch didn?t have a truck for them until then?
BTW, the person who had inspected our house and gave us a quote on the move said since it was off season, she couldn?t imagine it taking more than 2 or 3 days to get to Boca and she was sure it would be considerably less that what she quoted us. The driver also said if we asked for him to take it, he could get it there Monday or Tuesday. Well?
I called first thing Monday morning and our contact wasn?t in and they didn?t know when they would make it. When I asked for a supervisor, they put me through to the Manager of Sales. He listened patiently and said he would look into it and find out the final weight and when we could expect delivery and call me back in 15 minutes. Well?
Two hours later, I called him and he said it would probably be Thursday before we got our stuff (the load was started on Friday) and that the weight was a little over what was quoted. After I explained that if our stuff wasn?t here quickly and cheaply, I would be spreading the story everywhere on the internet (including review sites like Angie?s List) and it was in their best interest to impress me from this point on, I went back to sit on our inflatable bed and ponder the error of my ways?
After 4 days of ?sleeping? (and I use the term loosely) on an inflatable mattress, the driver showed up early on Thursday. He had to wait for his unloaders but they got started around 9:00 am. About halfway through unloading, they realized that the parts box (containing the hardware for all of the furniture they had disassembled) was missing. By the end of the day and after phone calls to everyone involved, they finally said they would have a local contractor contact me who would inspect the items and then provide the necessary hardware. Meanwhile, our dining room table, futon, office desk, and master bed headboard sat on the floor in pieces.
The next day, I was sent a form from the claims department who said that I needed to fill out and submit a claim for the parts which they had lost. I also needed to take photos of the furniture involved and text them to the contractor. The contractor then called and said he didn?t need photos and that he would be over that afternoon to inspect the items. He showed up as scheduled (a refreshing change) and said that, unfortunately, he wouldn?t be able to get the parts and return until the following Monday. I questioned the claims department about the necessity for filing a claim for the parts they had lost and was told that I could wait up to ninety days to file?which is good because by the time I unpacked all the boxes, I had a host of other things that were either broken or missing. However, since they were not high dollar items and we had chosen the $.60/lb. coverage, it was hardly worth the effort.
To his credit, the contractor showed up the following Monday and got everything put together. So we now have a functional household again. With the help of God, extensive therapy, modern chemistry, and grain alcohol I am beginning to recover from the move. But when it?s time for you to move, do yourself a favor?choose someone other than Atlantic Relocation Systems. Or just set fire to all your stuff and call it a day?
