Small Appliance Repair
$1,000
Our subzero refrigerator stopped working on a Saturday morning before Christmas when all authorized sub zero services were closed.  We had a house full of guests and badly needed a repair.  We located this service on Angie's list.  Our first mistake was using somebody listed on Angie's list that did not show any references!
The first visit was from a gentleman driving a cadillac and carrying a small tool bag.  That was our first concern.  He was very pleasant.  He told us that the service person who had been scheduled was running behind and he came instead in an effort to solve the problem.   He advised that the refrigerator needed a Sub Zero relay and it would be ordered on Monday from Florida and somebody would return on Tuesday to install it.
On Tuesday, A repairman by the name of Winston arrived, spent 1-1/2 hour and told us that we should monitor the refrigerator closely based on a thermometer placed inside of it, to see if it would start cooling and he could check back with us the next day.  His bill was just under $1,000, including just under $400 for the relay.  We paid by credit card.  He advised that we might need a compressor for the refrigerator that would cost an additional $1,700 or so.  That is when we became concerned and later called him back to let him know we were going to postpone the service until after Christmas (we took our guests out to eat for the holidays at a cost of about $500!).
After a service call from a primary Sub Zero service company in Atlanta, we learned that Winston improperly installed a Whirlpool relay rather than a sub zero relay on the freezer compressor rather than on the refrigerator compressor (nothing was wrong with our freezer!).  We were also told that he had created an electrical hazard and left things "hanging."  His concern is that the action may very likely destroy the freezer compressor.  His actions also destroyed the refrigerator compressor.  His assessment was that the service was done by somebody who was not familiar with sub zero refrigerators.  He also stated that the repairman had discarded certain parts from the refrigerator.
Ultimately, if things had been done correctly all we needed was a $119 service call to add freon!  We were successful in having the credit card charge reversed but still face charges of $1,500 to $3,000 depending on whether or not the freezer compressor can be salvaged.
Do not under any circumstances use this service.  The bill left by the repairman did not contain an address and the name of his service cannot be found in the yellow pages or by doing a Google search.  Furthermore, the referral service that is listed on Angie's list would not provide his address for reasons of "confidentiality."
