When we called Athens Plumbing we got a person on the phone, and not an answering machine. They got us an appointment quickly and within only a few days of our call. They let us know that billing started as soon as they left the business so we were paying for travel time as well. The two plumbers showed up on time.
The issue is that we had contamination in our well and we wanted to solve the problem. We knew that municipal water would solve it and wanted to know how much that would cost, but we also wanted to know what our options were and really what was going on with our well.
Their first recommendation was that we needed an in-line water treatment system. From our perspective, if we wanted treated water we would just get municipal water. We wanted to know why our well was contaminated and if we could fix it. They said not really. They then noticed that our water supply pipes to our house were on the exterior of our house. They said they could bury them around the house to help with freezing. They recommended augering underneath our back porch, which they said was admittedly expensive.
When we asked about hooking up to municipal water they said they could dig us a deep well instead of the shallow one we had. They said it would solve our problems. We let them know that we didn't want a new well - we either wanted our current well to work or to use municipal water. They said that we could treat it quarterly (or more), put in a test system, or they could install a new line... but if they installed a new line our pipes would freeze so really we needed to get more work done.
They never closely inspected the wellhead and only upon explicit prompting did they remove the wellhead and measure our well. Others had come in and said that our wellhead wasn't sealed (just a slab of concrete over a big hole with gaps everywhere) which probably led to the contamination.
It seems these individuals could have solved our problem, however, it seemed that they were recommending more than what we needed. Pursuing them instead of other competitors probably would have meant we had safe drinking water. We just would have paid a lot more and maybe with not as sensible as a solution.
They were trustworthy enough just not with being dollar-wise.
We have used Athens Plumbing in the past and liked the quality of their work overall. However, we have been stunned or shocked by the price to some extent but recently the price for a basic service of just correcting a minor leak and tightening a handle was astronomical. They had been known in the community as a high priced company with poor customer relations or difficult to do business with. Because we were familiar with the family and did like the knowledge of a few key employees or owners, we tried to use them. We even counseled (unsolicited) with them on their perception in the market and how they might be more flexible with how they manage different cases and less rigid to deal with. We were unsuccessful and were unable to continue to do business with them. They refused to even address a concern about the time it took for a recent repair and the cost for said repair. They began scolding us about how we should be grateful for them and glad of our outcomes. Not willing to listen to customer feedback or work with us.
We were very disappointed and hope to make others aware so they hopefully might avoid a poor customer relations experience from this plumbing company and avoid getting overcharged.
They were fast, curteous, professional and efficient - and fairly priced. I would highly recommend Athens Plumbing to anyone who needs their services!
- 1. Good
- 2. Fast
- 3. Inexpensive
It was $207 to change out the two water heater thermostats... I was forewarned by the plumber: and quot;About $200.and quot; Fair enough...
We got features #1 and #2 -- but not #3. Here's why...
First, their labor fee is $115/hour. I'm going to compare that with other plumbing services, but that sounds a bit high, doesn't it? Imagine a water heater swap out!
Next, they charge from the second their truck leaves the shop until it drives back in... Hmm... That sounds more like cab service billing than from a plumbing service!
In short, we got hot water back the same day -- and the plumber probably holds the award for and quot;most tattoos, and quot; but I'm switching back to Carson Plumbing... Same deal 6 years ago was $125 and included the 2 heating elements, as well...
The second visit, they came within the timeframe agreed to and were very responsive to my questions and checking things for me even though they didn't find the source of the noise. They did give some things that might cause the noise but didn't recommend trying any of them without knowing for sure.
They also pointed me to a store I could get the correct flapper for my toilet, which apparently doesn't work with standard flappers.
