Learn from my mistake and DO NOT go with this company. I have moved more than the average person (5 times in the last 2 years for example), so I know a thing or 2 about moving and moving companies. So when I tell you I am so disappointed that I used USA Family Movers I really mean it. My typical moving company was not available, so I started to look around. USA Family Movers seemed to have great reviews, I read through pages and pages of reviews and felt like I was making an okay decision. Looking back now, I can see that this is the same scam that they play on most people, but they just don't realize they're being scammed. The movers I usually use have sent 2-3 movers in the past and it's never taken more than 2.5 hours (1 bedroom + office). That is the timeframe for moving from one apartment to another, wrapping, unwrapping, and putting everything where I want it. I was moving everything to storage on this move, so thought I really could stay withing the 2 hour minimum with the 3 movers I had reserved. The day before my move I got a call from Wendell to go over my move and all the specifics. Once again, I had to go through every piece of furniture I had, so he could assess what was needed. He was also asking about the use of blankets. Since I was moving to storage, he said I could rent blankets from my storage place to use, provide my own blankets, pay for their paper blankets, or just have the movers use the blankets to move and then unwrap and leave my furniture "naked" in the storage unit. I decided to go with the last option because I was trying to save money in my move and didn't think the blankets were necessary. The morning of my move I got a call from Wendell telling me that one of their trucks called out and they would be trying to find some replacements, so my move got pushed back to later in the day (12-4). I was only able to get the morning off, so was relatively inconvenienced, but things happen. I got a call a little later from Roy, the driver of the truck assigned to me. He said he was finishing up a move and then would be coming to me. But the problem was that I paid for 3 movers and he had 5 in his truck. If I didn't go with 5 then he'd have to go back to the office and drop the extra men off, so, would I want to have the 5 movers show up and pay the difference? Anytime something like this has happened to me in the past, the companies have sent the extra men at no extra charge because this was not fault/the move had already gotten moved. I told him I didn't want 5 men because I wanted to keep costs down and stay around 2 hours. He told me it was definitely going to take more than 2 hours, but he could make it work to bring a 4th man. When I asked what the difference was in price he told me it was only $30 more ($179 vs. $209). I said I guess I can do that. Then he ended up saying he had to go by the office anyways and drop off the 5th man, so I accepted the 4th man for no reason. I got a call from him a while later confirming the 4th man, but now he told me the rate was $239. Which I was super annoyed about but since it was DEFINITELY going to take more than 2 hours I did the math to figure our that would be cheaper than a whole extra hour for 3 men. He again went over the whole blanket conversation I had had with Wendell prior to the move. I told him I already discussed this and want them to just use their typical blankets and unwrap when we got to the storage unit. Then I got a call a little while later from another one of the movers on the truck and he was asking me about blankets and how many paper or regular blankets they should bring/what I wanted to do. I also told him I already discussed this with Wendell and Roy, but that I wanted them to use their blankets and then unwrap when we got to the storage unit. When they got there I had everything ready to go -- Everything disassembled for the most part. Most of my boxes I had already moved, there were only about 10 left and my furniture. Again, Roy asked me about blankets and said that wrapping and then unwrapping when we were on site would take so much extra time, so he recommended just using the shrink wrap (which is what movers typically use to secure blankets to furniture). Then everything could stay in the shrink wrap in my unit. I figured this would make for a quicker move OUT in the future, so decided to go that route. It wasn't until they had all the furniture loaded on the truck that they mentioned any charges for the supplies used (tape, shrink wrap, etc.). In the initial confirmation email you receive from them it does say "We do charge for any additional packing materials such as tape, shrink wrap, and/or boxes." Stupid me. I thought that meant additional, like if there is some stuff you forgot or missed that the movers catch that they will have those extra materials you can pay for. This is wrong. They charge for all the materials they use, unless you provide your own. **In my opinion -- This should be included in any move if you're paying for movers. Once they have everything on the truck, they also request that you pay for your move up front. They calculate how long they think it will take to move and then if it ends up not taking that long they will give you back the excess money you paid. That is not conventional and I found it very uncomfortable. We tried to ask if we could pay at the end, but they would not allow for it. They estimated the move would take 3 hours, but also pointed out to me how fast it was going with the 4th person. When Roy announced to me that I owed him an additional $873 I was shocked & didn't understand where the figure was coming from. (3*239 = 717) On the way to the dropoff location I called Wendell so he could break it down for me. He said something about travel expenses, which was what my deposit was. Or that's how it was explained to me at least. He told me that was wrong, but also that I had reserved 3 men and got 4 so I owed extra money from that. I got a 4th man that I technically didn't even request, but I digress. He explained some other BS charges that didn't make sense either. Then he had the audacity to tell me that Roy estimated this was going 3 hours, but if I only had the 3 men it would have taken 5.5 hours so I was really getting such a great deal. FIVE AND A HALF HOURS?! Are you kidding me!? To move 1 bedroom, living room, dining room, washer & dryer, and some miscellaneous furniture?! I only had 10 boxes. I could have moved it myself in 5.5 hours. So, no. I did not think I was getting the deal of a lifetime. It puts you in a real uncomfortable position, because the guys actually moving were sweet and did a good job. But you're so annoyed by being manhandled that you have to not be rude to them. Anyways, they ended up finishing in 2.5 hours, but this was still the most expensive move of my life. Almost $1000 later and I am left with such a bad taste in my mouth and am so mad at myself for going with this company. My mom is a realtor, and will tell all her clients to avoid using this company. I am telling all of my friends, and will mention it anytime I hear ANYONE talk about moving. Avoid this SCAM company!!!
