Staircase and Millworks Co

My experience was disappointing at the start, ie. the salesman. He was a no show for the morning appt we set up at my house. I call and leave him messages. He finally returns call that night and said he had written it down on the wrong day. We rescheduled. He looks at the project and I ask him for an on-the-spot estimate. He gives me a price and says removing the existing staircase will be an extra couple of hundred. Few days latter got a written quote from him for 25% higher that spot estimate. I asked several questions about a lengthy contract he wanted me to sign and why it several times referenced "see drawings" enclosed. There were not any he told me. He was irritated upset with me when I mentioned the 25% increased on the quote. The opening line in his response back to me by email spoke to the whole experience, "It is what it is." I have been in sales service 30 years. I know good service and I know indifference. I would have used this company but for the arrogance and self appreciation of the salesman. I went with another company and through them learned the small print in my quote from Southern did not include a permanent framing support under the stairway. It was, as the agreement stated, "up to the home owner". I was satisfied going with the other company which had only a one page simple agreement with no small print for me to sign, a professional and well informed salesman who quoted a competitive price and who installed a terrific looking staircase - with all the permanent structural support anyone would expect.
