We didn't ask them to grind the stump. It was right next to another tree and we've got little kids who love to climb on stumps, so we just left it. We had three different people come out and provide us estimates. We had one that was lower and one that was higher, and we opted not to do the higher one just because of the cost. The lower price one we liked not to do because I couldn't find any verification that they were licensed and bonded. So Matthew's Tree Service was in the middle of the road when it came to price, but they were licensed and bonded. It was a little bit of a bear to get a hold of them for scheduling. The way that they scheduled had to do with kind of a rolling schedule of who was calling and for what work in what area. We kind of ended up with a situation where we said you know when we are out there and we didn't really hear anything for a week and a half. Then all of a sudden they said they will be out there some time in the next three days. It would have been nice to know that a little bit closer, but I understand that he was trying to maximize the efficiency of the scheduling. He knew his business. He was to point and very direct with us.

"Working with the [member name removed] family was certainly a pleasure, and their kind words were appreciated. K[member name removed] were very flexible with scheduling, especially when it came to juggling days/times around Mother Nature. We wish them all the best for a healthy & happy 2015 and beyond."

They have taken out two trees for us in the past and they did a really good job on that. The only reason that I knew that they were here the last time was because my driveway was cleaner when they left than it was when I left for work that morning. They clean and they do a fabulous job. The tree that they took out the last time was dead, rotted and partially down so they took down the rest of the tree which was about 40 feet of it and cleaned up after themselves. They are always very nice. We would absolutely use them again if needed.

I would recommend them. I was very pleased with it and they did good work. Their price was fair and they cleaned up their mess. I was great happy with them. I would definitely use them again.

The tree was on a property line so my neighbor had the most the interaction with them. The quote came in at about the lowest of the 3 I got and they were able to do the work on short notice. Did all the work stated and removed and cleaned everything before they left.

The project started well. I received a recommendation for Matthew from a friend in the landscape business. Matthew promptly went by the house to review and give me a price. He left me a voicemail saying the project would be $425 and it would include removal of the tree and roots and grinding of the stump. The emailed quote only mentioned removal of the tree and grinding of the stump. My mistake that I did not ask why the roots were not included on the written quote. Because I needed to have the utilities located, it was a few days before I could let the company know it was okay to come out and do the work. I did that on a Monday. On Friday of that week when I had heard nothing from them, I called Matthew and asked when they would be out. He said I was second on the list for that day. Great. It was not done. The following Monday I called him again and asked what happened and, without going into the details of our conversation, he became angry with me and said if I needed to get the job done quickly I should call someone else. (I was concerned that the utility locators would fade.) He then proceeded to again tell me that I was second on their list but that he had given the crew the day off. Since it was going to rain the next day, I mentioned, I would be looking at Wednesday at the earliest. I felt I was too far along and agreed to wait. When I got home at the end of that Monday, my tree was gone. I was surprised but the crew had done an excellent job of the removal. They had taken away all of the debris and left everything in good condition. The stump was still there but I received an email the next day (with the invoice) saying that the stump would be removed by the end of the week. By Wednesday the stump was indeed gone but the large roots were not. There was also a pile of the stump mulch but I did not mind that. Rather than call Matthew myself and risk his wrath, I opted to contact my landscape friend and see if the way the project was left was typical. The "mulch" was indeed typical as it can help fill in the hole but he called Matthew to ask about the roots. The bottom line was that Matthew said he could come back and do the roots but he would have to charge me more. At that point, I let it go. Since it wasn't actually on the quote and I did not save the voicemail, I did not think I would get very far. I paid him for the work done and will not use him again. While the work his crew actually did was good, dealing with Matthew's temper and his abysmal customer service is not worth it.

I called several tree services (three on Angie's list.) Matthew was the only service to respond (at all!) and in a timely fashion. He kept in touch with me as promised, came out and looked at what we wanted done and gave me an estimate. When I gave the okay he told me he would call when his crew could come out; he did call as promised with a definate date for the work to be done. My husband and I are VERY pleased with Matthew's tree service and would not hesitate to call on them again.

My wife and I are SHOCKED at the favorable reviews. (We contacted Matthew's Tree Service based on another online source, not Angie's List). We e-mailed Matthew's wife two days after the job saying that we knew the additional $300 was a lost cause, but asking politely if he could send a crew back out to saw up the logs into firewood and remove the debris. Well, our reward for this gesture was him calling my wife on the phone screaming that she had "lied about the job" and slamming the phone down on her (the customer?). I don't understand this. There was no way we were going to measure that tree and risk getting killed; my wife and my neighbor made their best guess. If the foreman disagreed, he shouldn't have started the job. Matthew has been threatening and abusive and we caution you against using him.

"Reply 2/16/2008:I’m both surprised & perplexed by the above comments. [member name removed] called my office Sunday, Feb.10th @ 1:45pm during a wind storm advisory, explaining to my secretary that she had an 18”w/40’ tall tree that was creaking from a split starting from the base & going up. My secretary put her on hold, called me, & I contacted her within 2 mins. [member name removed] informed ME that the tree was 12-16”w/40’ tall, split & headed toward her house. I gave her a ballpark price of $750-$900 to get the tree on the ground. She stated “her husband [member name removed] was out buying rope to wrap around the tree.” My crew was dispatched & arrived before 3pm. Luis (a native who speaks English with a lisp) assessed the tree at 23”w/120’tall w/not only a wide split from the base up, but already gaping from a clean non-splintering break. Plus, the tree was 15’ from the house with little space to work in. The tree was temporarily stabilized until I arrived. Once there, I informed [member name removed] that the price would be a flat $1200 because of the increased size & severity of the damage. I did not hear an objection, and work commenced. The tree was safely brought down & the logs left in 5’ pieces. I asked if they wanted us to come back & haul the wood away & I was told “that would not be necessary.” I never accept payment for a job until it has been completed & the customer is satisfied. By [member name removed] thanking my crew members & me while she personally walked me to my truck, I believe, was an indication that she was in fact satisfied. She hand wrote out her Visa info & handed it to me along with her email address, so my secretary could run it through & send her a receipt. I don’t know where “abusive, unethical & exploitative” come into play. We responded to an emergency situation, safely took the tree down & were paid for the service. I do not scream at customers on the phone, nor can I “slam” a cell phone. By the way, I’m well known for my “beet red face.” It’s sun damage from 25 years of working outside. I am very proud of my crew and how they handled this extremely dangerous tree. They deserve all the credit for a job well done! F Y I : AFTER MY REPLY WAS POSTED, [member name removed] WENT BACK & CHANGED SOME OF THE CONTENT & ACCUSATIONS OF HIS ORIGINAL FEEDBACK. HIS WIFE [member name removed] HANDLED THE TRANSACTION FROM INITIAL PHONE CALL TO PAYMENT, WITH HER SINCERE APPRECIATION. THE "BALLPARK" PRICE RANGE INITIALLY GIVEN WAS BASED ON INFO PROVIDED BY [member name removed] VIA PHONE PRIOR TO DISPATCH OF MY CREW. WHEN I ARRIVED, I FOUND THE INFORMATION TO BE GROSSLY INACCURATE, HENCE THE REQUOTED PRICE. I WOULD NEVER JEAPARDIZE MY 25 YEAR REPUTATION BY DECEIVING A CUSTOMER IN ANY WAY--ESPECIALLY DURING AN EMERGENCY WHERE SKILL & SWIFT ACTION ARE KEY. THANK YOU."

Overall the job went very well. The crew was very professional and hustled the whole time. They chipped all of the wood on site and cleaned up all of their debris. We thought they would be able to grind a stump at the same time, but that is done by a separate crew. We asked for an estimate to have that done, but haven't heard back. The overall cost of the job was around $150 higher because I told them the tree thickness at around 1 foot up from the ground rather than the tree thickness at the very bottom (16 inches versus 21 inches).

They returned our call for a quote within a couple of hours and were out to give the quote the next day. Incredibly, they were able to remove the tree the same afternoon (had another job down the road). They are bonded, insured, quick, polite and thorough. I will probably have them out to grade the backyard as well. I highly recommend!
