Our project manager was Chad Smith. He was attentive and sensitive to our needs as homeowners who must live in the home while it is being remodeled. He seems to run a tight ship with regard to scheduling, and made sure that there was very little, if any, down-time once the project began. He visited often to check on the workmanship, and is very knowledgeable about how things should be done and how they should look. All the demolition, repairs and restructuring were expertly done by skilled employees who know what they are doing and do it well. One of the many benefits of having a remodel done by Jansen's is that they order the cabinets from a superior cabinet maker, Starmark Cabinetry in our case, and the quality of the cabinets will not disappoint. It takes approximately 6 weeks for the cabinets to be custom made and shipped from Starmark's factory in South Dakota. Jansen does not schedule the project to begin until the cabinets have arrived and are stored in their warehouse.
We chose maple cabinetry in a Villa Ivory finish that is beautiful and appears to be quite durable. We opted for tile that looks exactly like dark wood flooring, and chose a tile backsplash that brings together the colors of the cabinetry, the granite countertops, the flooring and the stainless steel appliances. Our new kitchen includes a chimney type stainless stove hood that is vented through the attic and out the roof. All the walls in the foyer, living room and kitchen were painted by one of Jansen's professional painters with colors that we chose.
Our project took about 4 weeks. We understand that many kitchen projects, depending on size, take longer. If you must live in your home during a remodeling project, be prepared for a lot of dust. This is especially true when tile has to be removed. Jansen's makes every effort to confine and remove the dust as quickly as possible, but it will penetrate through the HVAC system no matter how many plastic sheet barriers are erected. Your normal life WILL be disrupted during the project and there is no way to get out of that. Chad Smith, our project manager, showed great understanding of the homeowner's dilemma and made sure that all employees clean up the area before leaving each day. The employees of Jansen's Quality Construction create quality in everything that they do. You will not get a cut-rate price, nor will you get a cut-rate job. What you will receive is a lot of focus on detail and on making sure that you are pleased with your remodel. We are thrilled with the final result, and are now able to enjoy a new, beautiful, and user-friendly kitchen.
"Thank you so much for the kind words."
The people who did the work, particularly DJ, were focused on doing high quality work. If something was not up to their standards, they took it out and started over. At least once, I couldn't see that there was anything amiss, but they took it out and started over anyway. They were very diligent in their work and trustworthy. It only took a couple of days for us to be comfortable leaving them alone in the house for hours at a time.
While everyone else was great, we had a lot of trouble with Sarah Bowman, one of the designers. She was perfectly happy to do or order whatever we wanted, but she was rarely able to provide suggestions. When asked about a style of faucet her response, which was common, was, and quot;Iand quot;m sure whatever you choose will look great.and quot; Not helpful. She also had trouble order parts correctly the first time. We ended up with some wrong parts and too many of some parts. It doesn't feel that she is very good with details.
We also had a problem with the master bath vanity she ordered. It was our fault for not checking her work before the order was finalized. That was done before we realized she had a problem. She ordered a vanity that had the sinks placed so close to the edge of the space, that I could not stand in front of the sink because my shoulder was up against the wall. She didn't think that was a problem. We had to order a different vanity. Jansen was unwilling to refund the cost of the first vanity. They did agree to sell both vanities to us at their cost. We donated the first, new, unused vanity to the Habitat for Humanity Restore. At least we can get a tax deduction for it.
We have had a couple minor follow-up items since they finished the work. They have come out promptly and fixed the issues - they were minor, afterall, in one visit.
Despite our difficulties with Sarah, we can highly recommend Jansen because of the quality of the work that was done. As an added bonus, they were not the most expensive proposal we received. Nor was it the least expensive.
I did have some problems with the communications loop in the office, to the point where I almost went somewhere else. However, I am glad that I did not as the plumber they sent out was absolutely fantastic. He showed up bright and early at 8AM ready to get to work, was pleasant and polite, and got the job done promptly. I was completely paranoid as I had just been badly burned by another contractor and he satisfied in all respects.
Just be persistent about calling back and actually getting an appointment and there should be no problems with these folks.
