"Initial experience was very good. Primary goal was clean and seal patio, but we also used them to clean screens, pressure wash, and some light paver repair. They worked around weather issues to complete the job in a timely fashion. The issue I have is with the quality of the seal job. In only about 6-9 months, we began to see weeds growing throughout the patio. My expectation would be at least 12-18 months, if not longer."

"He didnt finish or didnt notice that he didnt competely clean the sidewalk. We had to take our pressure washer out and finish it. I should have called him to let him know but he already had a rough morning with his truck tire blowing out.

"Overall, very well. Prompt, courteous, easy to work with. Their arrival was delayed about 30 minutes, nothing I would have considered an issue, but they sent a text notifying me of the delay well before the scheduled arrival time. One lesson learned however. Sham Shield is a pressure washing company, but pressure washing is not always the best tool. Some of my gutters are an integral part of the pool enclosure with the screen abutting the outside edge of the gutter. There was a lot of roof grit in the gutters. Sham Shield advised this would be a difficulty. The cleaning using a pressure washer blew grit through the screen on to the pool deck, with a considerable amount going into the pool. Sham Shield cleaned the deck, no issue, but there was nothing they could do about the grit in the pool. I don't fault Sham Shield, they did what I hired them to do, and advised me of the potential problem beforehand. I'll definitely use them again for pressure washing, but select someone who uses a different cleaning method for the pool enclosure gutters."

"Jesus came out to see the extent of work to be done and gave me a time and cost estimate. He scheduled me in, and called to confirm the day before. The first day Jesus and one of his crew came out to do prep work-it required quite a bit as I had previously had vines growing all over back wall and had recently removed them-there were many little pits or plant bits left behind.
The next day they showed up to do pressure washing. Day 3 was mostly filling cracks, repairing some wood and priming.
During the process of painting I noticed a small crack he had missed, I asked for a little more repair on a piece of wood near soffit and I asked that edges of shutters be painted (he had already painted edges the body color of house but had done so because that was how it had been done previously). Jesus listened and made all the adjustments just as I had asked. The job was finished in a half day more than originally quoted and about $100 more, but it was well worth it. (I had told him he didn't need to paint the front door because I was planning on getting a new one, but he did anyway-now I don't have to rush the door replacement!)
Whenever Jesus and/or his helper left for the day they left everything neat and tidy.
I was so pleased with the work done that I asked for a quote on some interior work to be done also!

"I called Richard after finding him on Angie's list and made an appointment for an estimate.  Richard arrived on time and we looked over all areas to be cleaned. I was surprised at the amount that he gave me and we set a date.
Richard arrived not only on time but even a bit early.  I am impressed with how thorough he was and how patiently he went about his business.  Richard did a fantastic job and the house and walks look like new.  I found him to be very friendly courteous and professional.  I will use his services again and I highly recommend him for any of his advertised services."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Composite decking requires a solid foundation, substructure, or subframe to ensure stability. This base is typically composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame's joists can be built from various materials like composite, plastic, timber, or metal, as long as the base can support the deck's weight without shifting. A professional deck builder might recommend installing the frame on a solid concrete base for added durability. The final design and materials for the substructure will depend on your budget, the type of deck, and environmental conditions.

You should refinish your deck to maintain its appearance, durability, and longevity. Refinishing your deck protects the wood from foot traffic and the elements. It also helps extend its life span by keeping rot, mildew, and termites at bay. By maintaining your deck, you can avoid the cost of replacing your deck sooner. A refinished deck also looks great and restores some of its original beauty.

Finding a reputable deck builder should start with speaking with a local company and asking for samples of past work and references. You can review the company’s workmanship and speak with past customers to learn what the customer service was like throughout the process. It’s also a good idea to read online reviews and check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website to see if the company has a history of customer complaints. If you can get a referral from a family member or friend, that’s another great option.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
