"I needed my entry locks rekeyed due to a lost set of keys after hours. After comparing reviews I went with A to Z Lock and Safe and they scheduled Chris to come out around 1700 on Saturday as I requested. Chris called at 1630 and confirmed arrival and was on time. He listened to my request and examined the doors and within 15 minutes had both entry doors and a spare deadbolt rekeyed per my request, including five copies of keys. He was very knowledgeable about my custom doors and answered additional questions I had for potential future upgrades for home automation integration and security systems. All in all very friendly, professional, and timely work. I highly recommend A to Z Lock and Safe and will use them again as needed."

If you also have a standard door leading to your garage, install a robust deadbolt lock and reinforce the frame with security plates. Then, secure any windows with shatterproof glass or film to deter break-ins. Consider a smart garage door opener for your car entrance, enabling remote monitoring and control through your smartphone. Motion-activated lighting around the garage to deter intruders is a great way to amplify these security efforts. Rekeying your own locks is a low-cost task that prevents you from having to replace the locks themselves completely. The first couple of times you rekey a lock may be challenging because this is an intermediate DIY task. You can purchase a rekey kit from most hardware stores, but make sure you’re buying the kit from the brand of lock in your home that you’re going to rekey. 

Security systems are one of the measures that deter burglars the most. Research suggests most burglars look for signs of a security system before going in, although the presence of a security system doesn’t automatically mean they won’t enter the home. However, a security system with cameras can decrease the chance of a burglary overall.

Keyless locks are often considered safer since they’re protected by passcodes instead of a physical key, making it harder to be picked. However, they are not infallible. And like all electronic devices, outdated models are more prone to problems and safety concerns. If you’ve experienced multiple lockouts in the past year, or your lock is responding slower than usual after you key in the passcode, it might be time to upgrade to a newer one. Even if your lock is working fine, you should still change your access code at least twice a year.

You may be able to get a broken key out of a lock by yourself, depending on the situation. If a portion of the key is still protruding from your lock, try lubricating the keyway and using pliers or even a bobby pin to pull the key out of the hole. If you have jigsaw blades handy, you can also try using those to grab onto the stuck key and pull it out.
