"Blake, Dmarreo, and Jeremy delivered excellent service from start to finish. They were a pleasure to work with - friendly & professional, engaged, knowledgeable, and committed to their work. Initially, they identified issues with the job for us that we were able to resolve, and then completed the work on schedule. The finished work meets the engineer's specifications, the job site was left clean and orderly, and the final walk-through was not rushed but very thorough. The installed product repairs the foundation issue and increases the value of our home."

A Mark of Excellence has offered personal services in masonry care and restoration, architectural concrete casting, and leather furniture dyeing in the Roaring Fork Valley for nearly 40 years. We can build you a bar top, a half ton concrete spa sink 8 ft. long, bath and spa surrounds in concrete or pressure wash, repair and seal your interior and exterior stone and concrete. We are equipped to pressure wash interior masonry surfaces, a unique service which is nearly always required to properly clean a porous masonry surface for sealing sans spots and the cloudy effects of embedded, impacted soil. No amount of brush and mop or vacuum cleaning will remove sufficient soil from a non-honed stone surface to prepare it for sealing. the dirt will show through the sealer! We have been the 'go to' company when problems occur due to inappropriate use of sealers and improper pre-seal cleaning. We have been re-dyeing, balming and polishing leather furniture for over 25 years. Many leathers can be restored to nearly original color and often color can be changed to adapt to new styles and designs. Visa and MasterCard are accepted.

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Mortar and thinset both serve the same purpose—tile adhesion—but have different compositions and use-cases. Thinset is heatproof and presents a wide range of possibilities due to the added polymers. Mortar is typically used for bonding stones and brick. Thinset is rarely used outside, while mortar is rarely used inside.

It’s called cobblestone because it’s made of stones that are “cobbed” together. A cob is a term that refers to rounded lumps. Originally, cobblestone streets were made from pebbles and stones gathered from riverbeds that had been rounded over time by the passage of water. The term has nothing to do with a cobbler, which is the term for someone who makes and fixes shoes.

You should use cement for a chimney crown. The purpose of the chimney crown is to protect the mortar below from water damage and the effects of weather. For this reason, chimney crowns should only be made using cement. When repairing a crown, use caulks and sealants designed for cement repair rather than mortar repair.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

Mortar is a mixture of sand and cement that binds materials, such as bricks, stones, and concrete blocks, together. Think of it as the glue that fills in the gaps between bricks and stones, then seals them in place to prevent damage or deterioration. Mortar also helps spread the load across a wall or structure, keeping cracks and shifting at bay.
