"My husband and I hired Corey from Planet Excavation 3 times - first for the garage foundation, then for roads, and the 3rd project was the 4-bedroom-home septic. I was thrilled with the quality of his work, his knowledge, his honesty and the price! His bid was the lowest, but his work was better than I ever expected. My husband is a picky engineer and Corey met his standards with ease and professionalism. I would not call anyone else in the four corners area for anything that Corey is able to do. Also, he had referred us to several other companies to complete other tasks involved in building a home and improving our lot; they were all honest and hardworking (just like Corey). You would be foolish to hire anyone else...just sayin' Alana CL"

"Trevor and his crew did an outstanding job. We are very pleased with their work. The large moss rocks look amazing. The red mulch really high lights and accentuates the different levels of landscaping. The dry river bed really adds depth to the whole project. The sod that was added on both sides of the sidewalk works great with the whole concept."

"I got to know Matt, the owner, over a few conversations before we officially hired Gravel Pros LLC. Matt and his team deliver gravel, top soils, etc but we actually hired them initially to haul away a ton of oak brush and other landscape trimmings. Absolute life saver."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

A scattering of leaves won’t pose a problem through the winter, but a thicker layer of leaves may not decompose before the first frost and can instead weigh down your grass and harbor mold or fungi. A thick layer of leaves also cuts off light and air that grass needs to grow. That’s why we suggest removing thick leaf layers within several days if possible. If your lawn goes dormant over the winter and snow has already caught up with you, then remove the leaves in early spring before your grass-growing season starts so your lawn can thrive.

The best type of rock for landscaping depends on your specific project and needs, as different rocks are suited for different applications. For covering large areas or creating an affordable driveway, consider gravel, but note that it can wash away in flowing water. For water features, river rocks are a good option. Flagstone and cobblestone are ideal for aesthetically pleasing patios and walkways. If you are building a stone wall, fieldstone or small boulders are up to the task. Large boulders and landscape rocks work well as statement pieces, to fill empty space, or to indicate boundaries, but be mindful that they can overwhelm smaller gardens. The best approach is to first define your landscaping project and then select the rock type that best fits that purpose.

Yes, such as sod installation and erosion control for comprehensive site improvement.

The best way to landscape your front yard on a budget is to invest in hiring a professional for hardscaping—things like upgrading walkways, redoing driveways, and installing partitions around garden beds. You can often do the softscaping yourself—think laying down mulch, caring for your lawn, removing weeds, and planting flowers and shrubs. It’s also almost always worthwhile to pay a professional for routine yard maintenance, as this dramatically improves curb appeal and delivers above 100% ROI in most cases.

Grass is the most popular and safest option for planting over a septic drain field, but you can also plant small flowering plants and other lightweight plants that don’t have woody or deep roots. Avoid trees and bushes within 10 feet of the field, as the woody roots can crack the perforated pipes. You should also avoid planting vegetable or fruit gardens over your drain field, as a leak from the pipes could contaminate the soil and put anyone who eats the produce at risk.
