The most common places for water leaks in a home are the fixtures we use most often: the kitchen and bathroom sinks, the showerhead, and the toilet. These components all contain moving parts and O-rings that prevent water from flowing through when the fixtures are shut off, and these can wear down over time and lead to minor drips or significant leaks. Over time, cast iron pipes corrode and experience pipe scale, which thickens the inside of the walls and increases the chance of clogs while also decreasing water flow. As the material deteriorates, you could experience costly leaks that increase reparation expenses. 

Cast iron can last between 50 and 75 years, but it’s still a good idea to check for leaks as your pipes approach the 25-year mark, as pipes can already show signs of deterioration within the first three decades.

If your copper pipe springs a leak, you don’t have to replace the entire pipe. You can replace just the damaged section, either by adding a new portion of pipe or using a slip repair coupling. Nonetheless, you may want to replace your pipes if they’re more than 20 years old or suffering from severe corrosion. A pipe replacement costs somewhere between $400 to $2,200.
