It went pretty painlessly! I removed the carpet and all the staples myself, and resecured the MDF on top of the subfloor to the subfloor to get rid of any soft spots. Lowe's came when scheduled to measure, and came when scheduled to install. The work appears to be high quality, of the carpet I wanted, at among the lowest price I could find, and installed with a ~2 day turnaround.
Two minor complaints:
- It seemed like I entered a black hole after I paid my $35 to get the measurement, but when I called after ~4 days to ask for status and to jump start that process, it then proceeded smoothly.
- Working in Mountain View, it would've been far easier to just give the contractor access to install rather than be there to meet them. I was told that wasn't an option because I needed to validate the carpet color before installation, which seemed reasonable. So I waited for the installer, who fortunately was on time, enabling me to get to work on time. But when we met, he didn't show me a sample or ask me to validate the color at all, so it seems me waiting was perhaps unnecessary afterall.
Those minor points aside, however, the contractor called when complete to let me know, and as mentioned, it looks great.

We had horrible service with them. Their customer service is horrible. They will promise you a date and then not come out. We took off work and waited days for their service people to come out, and they never did show up. They would give us excuse after excuse. I guess they go through a third party, so it was the third party's fault not theirs and they can't let us know about it. They are very sweet to you and then don't do anything they tell you they are going to. We will never use them again. They come across as professional, they just done come through.
