"I contacted Geotechnical, Inc. over the phone and immediately knew that they are the right team to help me complete my projects. My main contact at Geotechnical, Inc. was Engineer Mr. Nadim S. who was very knowledgeable, subject matter expert, professional, and best off all had great communication at all stages of the project status. Mr. Nadim, is also credit to saving me tons of rework, he made sure that the engineering team I hired to do the architecture/structural design adhered to sound engineering principles and safety standards. Geotechnical, Inc. saved me tons of rework and ultimatly money. I would definitely work with Geotechnical, Inc. in the future and highly recommend them to others. I do not usually leave reviews however Geotechnical, Inc. has earned my respect and deserve the feedback."

"Our Architect directed us to this company for structural drawings and plans. I have to say, in the entire process of purchasing a home, coming up with architectural plans for a remodel and then translating into structural drawings, Design Everest was head and shoulders above all the parties involved. The PM (Nanak) was prompt, on top of the details and very responsive. He proactively flagged any delays and hold up in schedule and followed up with updates on status and any feedback from the city or engineer throughout the process. I highly recommend them for their professionalism, promptness and efficiency."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

It's safe to assume that all exterior walls are load-bearing, or at least have load-bearing characteristics. Some older homes feature porches or bump-outs that don't rest on the home's foundation. However, they still must carry the weight of the roof section they support. Walls containing floor-to-ceiling glass or other non-structural elements must use post and beam configurations to meet load-bearing criteria.

A structural engineer evaluates any structural components, like floors, foundations, walls, and roofs, to ensure they can support the structure. They also consider the soil quality in your area, potentially extreme weather conditions, and proximity to bodies of water and groundwater to ensure your building can withstand any stresses placed on it by the surrounding environment. Structural engineers work on both new and existing buildings.

Structural engineers typically conduct inspections during a home sale or renovation, looking for signs of structural damage in various structures throughout the building, such as load-bearing walls, joists, beams, roofing trusses, foundations, and chimneys. Some of the warning signs that structural engineers check for include:

  • Dry rot

  • Infestation

  • Shifting or cracking foundations

  • Erosion

  • Water damage

  • Sagging, shifting, or damaged walls, ceilings, or roofing support

No, squeaky floors do not always mean there is structural damage. The noise is often caused by friction from issues like loose floorboards, gaps between the subfloor and joists, or loose subflooring. While many squeaks are harmless, persistent or worsening noise could indicate a more severe problem. If you notice other signs of structural damage—such as soft or sagging floors, cracks running from the wall to the ceiling, or horizontal cracks in your foundation—it's best to have a professional inspect your floor to determine the root cause.

The National Association of Home Builders requires repair of any foundation crack of more than one quarter of an inch, although local regulations may vary. In general, any visible crack that is growing in size, allowing water through, or that you have just noticed, is a good reason to call a structural engineer. Cracks can be a sign of a sinking foundation, so an inspection is a good idea for your peace of mind.
