Generally, a patio is more accessible than a standard deck because patios are constructed at ground level. However, decks can be made accessible by adding a wheelchair-accessible ramp, a vertical lift, or a stair lift along the entry. An ADA-compliant deck ramp costs about $3,000 on average. The additional investment will provide a much friendlier experience for your guests with movement impairments.

A simple square paver patio is the easiest long-lasting patio to install. With this basic shape, you won’t have to worry about curvatures in the design or having to cut pavers to fit. You could also opt for the gravel patio, but as noted, it can be messy and you will have to refill the gravel regularly as shoes and pet paws drag it out of its intended area.

A concrete porch costs about $2 to $10 per square foot upfront, while a wood porch costs about $4 to $30 per square foot, making concrete less expensive upfront. However, wood requires much more maintenance than concrete, so you’ll need to consider the costs of staining, painting, and resealing the porch every few years, which makes wood more expensive in the long run.
