"Ben did a great job installing our bathroom exhaust fan. He was on time, very clean and charged me the price he quoted. He even wore protective booties over his shoes while inside the house. I'm now looking for more projects for Ben to do. Thank You again, see you soon Ben."

"Joseph was on the job when he said he would be here. He is knowledgeable about the issue I presented, but did not try to oversell me on the job. He did notice that an electrical outlet could be improved with not a lot of time or money and which made my system safer. I would definitely hire Joseph and DIvine Electric again when I need them. "I recently bought an plug in EV vehicle and need a 220 charger installed. I had heard great things of Sean Conners of EFI so I contacted him. He promptly came by and gave me a fair quote, he even advised on me on the charger. Sean communicated very well and did the installation within days of me getting my charger. His work was excellent and I have no hesitation in recommending him highly. Do yourself a favor and use this professional electrician for all your electrical needs."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

It is safe to run a generator continuously, but you must follow safety protocols to ensure personal and home safety. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations, but the general recommendation is to turn generators off overnight or when you’re away from the house. Overworked generators can pose a fire hazard and if your generator is not in a well-ventilated area, running it continuously could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.

Natural gas and electricity rates vary significantly based on location, and pricing can change over time, too. It’s possible that in locations where natural gas is particularly inexpensive, it will cost less than grid-based electricity will. However, you should also factor in the generator’s initial costs and maintenance needs, as well as its noise level and if it can comfortably power all your home appliances.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

It might seem counterintuitive, but installing a generator transfer switch will save you money in the long run. While you’ll have to pay between $400 and $2,500 to have the transfer switch installed, you’ll recoup that amount later on when you don’t have to pay for expensive repairs to your appliances, devices, and electrical system that may have burned out, overloaded, or stopped working due to a sudden loss of power or an incorrect hook up of a generator to your home
