"Great company and nice people to work with. Everything they did was completed on time. And their work was organized and done well (including new plug outlets, installing new light fixtures, and replacing old ones). Would recommend them to others."

My office has provided design and architecture services for the past 20+ years throughout the Bay Area. I engage many different project scales, from interior renovations, to small additions, to entirely new homes and sites.\n\nI enjoy collaborating closely with clients to shape their initial goals and needs into a design concept, which helps to guide the project from start to finish. By using plan diagrams, design options explored in 3D, and reference images, we can quickly test different ideas and resolve the look and feel of your project.\n\nI especially enjoy projects that respond to the specifics of each building or site, and strive to creating meaningful connections between indoor and outdoor environments. Regardless of project size, I strive to exceed client expectation and provide complete and professional services from project start, to permitting and on to the construction phase.

"The people we had contact with were very nice.  The person who installed the shutters did a good job and was friendly and professional.  The shutters look like a quality product.

The main thing is, I should have done my research before I contacted the company.  I knew shutters look nice, but I didn't know anything about the workings of shutters.  I knew I wanted to be able to close the bottom for privacy, and have the top open, and vice versa.  Turns out, the center divider rail is exactly at my eye level.  When the bottom shutters are closed, I can not see out the window.  This is no ones fault but my own.  I just didn't give it any thought.  I feel very closed in.  I want to keep the shutters in the three bedrooms, but eventually replace the shutters with blinds, in the kitchen.

UPDATED:  March 23 2015

Since my original review, Mark, the sales person from The Blind Guy, contacted me.  He said he wanted us to be happy with our choices in window coverings, and he offered to replace the four shutters in the kitchen with blinds.  He said we could have them at cost.  They are committed to customer service, and they do not want unhappy customers.  I was amazed that they cared!  I really appreciated the phone call and we made an appt for Mark to come out and measure the windows for blinds.

Mark came out and did the measuring for the blinds.  I wanted to keep the frames and remove the existing shutter panels, and install blinds into the frames, if that was possible.  Mark took a look at it and said it could be done.  I wanted to keep the frames because they're really beautiful, and dress up the windows.

On 3/18/15 an installer came out and removed the shutter panels and installed the new blinds.  I had already bought kitchen curtains for the windows, and put them up after the installer was finished.  My windows are perfect.  I am so happy.  I can see out my kitchen windows easily, and I just feel more comfortable with the blinds.  Our kitchen windows are the only windows facing the street.  We are saving the shutter panels.  If we ever decide to sell the house we'll put the shutter panels back in, which will increase the value of the house.

The shutters in the three bedrooms are wonderful.  Two of the windows face west, and get the afternoon sun.  It's really great to be able to control the light coming into the rooms, and it's going to make a big difference during the summer months.

The people we had contact with at The Blind Guys were very professional, friendly, and did a good job.  We would use them again.  Many thanks to The Blind Guys!

"They sent the color choices and directions promptly. I was a little nervous about doing the measuring and making a pattern without assistance so procrastinated a bit. Once I sent in the order details I had hoped I would hear back with an estimated delivery time, but that didn't happen. However, I was in no hurry, so I didn't even really pay attention to how long it took. Maybe a few weeks. Not sure."

"Ben did an excellent job painting our family room. We recently purchased a home that had painted brown ceilings and dark tan walls. There is no way we could tackle painting over a brown 17+ foot ceiling on our own, so we started looking for assistance. We received 4 painting quotes. Ben, Joni was easily the most affordable (in one instance half the price) and quickest to get the job done. While we left on vacation, Ben came by, prepped, painted, and cleaned up. We came home to a and quot;newand quot; house. I would highly recommend him to anyone."

Lighting questions, answered by experts

Local building codes typically require conduit around exterior wiring. Conduit protects the wire from moisture, extreme temperatures, sun exposure, and harsh weather conditions to prolong its lifespan. When a wire is worn out, it can be dangerous as the risk of electric shock or fire increases.

Modern outdoor light fixtures are waterproof and weather resistant, and, provided they’re installed correctly and by a professional, the fixture and wiring can last for 20 to 30 years or more. The lifespan will depend largely on the quality of the fixture. The lifespan of the bulb will depend on the type of light you install:

  • CFL bulb (for sustained use): 15,000 hours

  • Halogen bulb (mostly for security): 2,000 hours

  • HID bulbs (for security): 12,000 hours

  • Incandescent bulb: 1,000 hours

  • LED bulb: 50,000 hours

Yes, professional landscape lighting is typically worth the investment. Installing a lighting system can improve your home’s curb appeal, safety, and security, and it can also deter burglars. It adds value to your home by creating a brightly-lit outdoor space you can use after dark and making the property more appealing to potential buyers. According to the National Association of Realtors, landscape lighting can add up to $2,500 to your home’s value, and on average, this type of home improvement has a 50% return on investment.

There are a number of reasons that landscape lights burn out, including an incorrectly installed transformer, inconsistent voltage, and burned-out or faulty bulbs. Troubleshoot landscape lighting problems by first determining whether it’s a system-wide problem or an issue with just one light, which will help you get to the bottom of your outdoor lighting woes.

If you’ve gone through the troubleshooting checklist for your motion detector flood light and it’s still not working, it’s time to consider a new one. Older models that need frequent fixes can be unreliable. Newer flood lights feature advanced technology that improves your lights’ sensitivity and overall performance. If you’re fed up with unexpected darkness, investing in a new light can give you the lighting you need to feel secure.
