"Process went well. We were trying to close on sale of house and during inspection the roof was determined to have hail damage. Buyer would not close on house until damages were repaired. Closing date was two weeks away at buyers request. I had to get insurance adjuster opinion and find a roofer who would do the work in this two week timeframe. Silas Taylor Roofing agreed to do work at short notice to assist us in closing the purchase. Did an excellent job on roof and repaired skylights. Guttering was also completed within the two week period. Clean-up was satisfactory and all work was approved by buyer. Without the understanding and flexibility of work schedule from Silas Taylor Roofing, it is doubtful we could have completed the sale of our residence. Not only was it done in short notice to assist the sales process, the work was done to the satisfaction of buyer and seller. An excellent job done in a professional manner."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

A skylight's ability to withstand hail depends on factors like material quality and thickness. Impact-resistant options, such as tempered or laminated glass, fare better against hail compared to standard glass. Proper installation and regular maintenance also contribute to their resilience. While smaller hailstones may not pose a significant threat, larger ones can cause damage. Consider skylight protection methods like covers or screens in hail-prone areas to enhance durability and minimize potential harm.

Installation typically takes 1-2 days, depending on the required roof type and structural modifications.

To maintain a skylight and ensure its performance over time, regular maintenance is required. This includes periodically cleaning the glass and frame to remove dirt, debris, and condensation. It is also crucial to inspect the seals and flashing at least once a year for any signs of wear, degradation, or leaks, paying special attention after heavy storms. Ensure that the drainage system is clear to prevent water buildup and potential leaks. Address minor issues like cracks promptly and consider occasional resealing to prevent drafts and moisture problems. While energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings or double glazing may require less upkeep, periodic professional servicing can help keep any skylight in optimal condition.

Yes, solar tubes are easier to install than skylights because they’re lighter, smaller, and easier to handle. They also require less roof cutting and have a faster, simpler installation process. This means they’re a more DIY-friendly option for homeowners who want to add more natural light to their homes.

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.
