"David Alkire and son, Tanner, excelled in an efficient, quality result. David is a very personable and yet humble professional who understands the customer's need for honesty in cost effectiveness and trustworthiness -- qualities that I have found very lacking in several previous lawncare "professionals, -- but now that I know David, my faith has been restored. It doesn't hurt to be a former military veteran and current police officer, using his 20 year lawncare experience to further help and safeguard people. This is a man many homeowners will greatly benefit from, by nurturing a long-term professional relationship with. He is passing on his time-honored "rules of good lawncare business" to his son, who will carry on the business, maintaining ties begun in the community for years to come . This is an opportunity to enhance many people's futures (not least of all the homeowner's) and be a part of the character building experience I found it to be."

Small jobs welcome

"Jared Springs is an excellent contractor. He kept me informed throughout the process of obtaining my Zoysia grass. He gave me a very fair estimate, even coming in UNDER budget. He is a very friendly person, a very hard worker, and does the work he says he is going to do, when he said he is going to do it. Any more landscaping I need done, I am definitely calling Jared. He holds a permanent place in my contacts!"

"Great work, highly recommend. Honest and hardworking, makes sure all the work is done and done properly. Charges a fair price, I have 1 acre and it was $80, could not beat that price anywhere!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The most important thing to put under a rock garden is the appropriate soil. The specific soil needed will depend on the type of plants you’re growing as well as the environment you live in. You can also put non-woven or woven fabric under the rocks to add to the garden's structural stability.

The best size rock for your landscaping depends on the design, as different boulders serve different purposes. If you want to group boulders to create a natural-looking cluster, you’ll need a range of sizes. Otherwise, here are some suggestions:

  • Small boulders (smaller than 12 inches across): Best for landscape edging and fire pits

  • Medium boulders (12–24 inches): Best for retaining walls and water features

  • Large boulders (more than 24 inches): Best as standalone landscaping features, steps, or walkways.

Of course, you can mix and match sizes to create a unique display.

A half inch above ground level is ideal for metal edging. This provides enough depth for the edging to hold in place and enough height to keep in most landscaping materials (like mulch or gravel). If you install edging too high off the ground, it will stand out from your landscaping and pose a tripping risk. If you install it too low, your ground cover won’t stay in place.

The best type of rock for landscaping depends on your specific project and needs, as different rocks are suited for different applications. For covering large areas or creating an affordable driveway, consider gravel, but note that it can wash away in flowing water. For water features, river rocks are a good option. Flagstone and cobblestone are ideal for aesthetically pleasing patios and walkways. If you are building a stone wall, fieldstone or small boulders are up to the task. Large boulders and landscape rocks work well as statement pieces, to fill empty space, or to indicate boundaries, but be mindful that they can overwhelm smaller gardens. The best approach is to first define your landscaping project and then select the rock type that best fits that purpose.

Yes, weeds can still grow in decomposed granite. If properly compacted, it can act as a good weed suppressant, meaning you’ll only pull weeds occasionally. But no ground cover is completely weed-proof. To further prevent weeds, you can try spraying your decomposed granite with distilled white vinegar.
