Small jobs welcome

"After purchasing a house in July, I didnâ t want to use the fireplace until it has been inspected and was ensured to be safe. After finding Hammer I scheduled an appointment for them to do the cleaning. The chimney sweep technician arrived as scheduled and was very professional and polite. He was very thorough in his inspection and cleaning of our chimney and fire box. He conducted both the inspection and cleaning very cleanly and made absolutely no mess in the process. He did inform me of a couple of things that probably needed attention at some point in time but weâ re not critical at the moment. I was very pleased with their service and pricing and plan to use them go forward in the future."

"Seemed good but unable to report fully on quality of work done since I've never had my chimney"whipped" as opposed to swept before. I was told it was superior to "sweeping", don't know that. Apparently service man "did not have proper shoes to go on my roof to sweep from above. I was a little appalled by this. I will see how it works when I have my first fire. Assume work is guaranteed. NICE GUYS Marianne, West Fork"

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

Repairing a fire-damaged home could cost anywhere from $2,000 to $200,000 or more—it all depends on the extent of the damage and the quality of the materials you use. In most cases, your homeowner’s insurance company will cover the majority of the repairs. If you’re buying a home with fire damage, though, it’s best to get an estimate from a fire damage restoration company to estimate the repairs before closing.

Yes, a bowl of vinegar can absorb smoke. If you want to use this method to reduce the smoke smell in your house, all you have to do is leave a bowl (or multiple bowls) of white vinegar out overnight. Alternatively, you can use bowls of baking soda, coffee grounds, or activated charcoal.

Yes, carpets should be replaced after a house fire or significant smoke damage, even if they appear undamaged. Smoke, soot, particulates, and chemicals can penetrate deep into the carpet fibers and padding, making complete removal a complicated and time-consuming process. If water was used to extinguish the fire, it can also soak through the carpet and padding, creating a risk of mold and mildew growth. Due to these challenges and potential health risks, replacing the carpet is the safest and most effective solution.

Smoke smell and odors typically will not go away completely on their own, especially once the particles have penetrated porous materials like walls, floors, ceilings, and furniture. While airing out affected items can help the smell subside over time, it often lingers for months or even years. To effectively remove stubborn smoke odors, you should combine several methods. Start with a thorough deep cleaning and deodorizing using substances like baking soda or activated charcoal. Air purifiers can also help capture airborne particles. In severe cases, you may need to replace heavily damaged materials. If the smell persists after repeated treatments, consider hiring a professional smoke damage restoration company for assistance.

The first thing you should do when cleaning smoke damage is open all your windows to ventilate the affected area and run an air purifier with a HEPA filter. Cover your furniture and belongings to prevent soot accumulation, and vacuum any soot that’s on the floor and other surfaces. Be sure to wear a mask, gloves, and eye protection when cleaning the affected area.
