"

We wanted to remodel our newly purchased condo but didn't think we'd be able to afford all the projects we had in mind because of the limitations of our budget. A couple of local contractors in Gulf Shores had estimated a minimum cost of $40,000. We contacted Help-Around-the-House based on favorable Angie's List reviews and found that they more than live up to their great reputation. Dan Parks and his team worked closely with us from start to finish, not only helping us to stay within our budget but also coming up with ideas that were better than what we originally had in mind. All of the work was of high quality, yet it was done amazing fast.  We couldn't be more satisfied with the final result.  We definitely recommend Dan Parks and the Help-Around-the-House team to anyone who wants high quality work done at a fair price.

"Amanda was really very good!  At first I was very skeptical, thinking why did I pay money to just speak with someone on the phone about my kitchen remodel project... but after just a few minutes of her addressing some of the issues/questions I emailed to her earlier, I knew it was worth it.  It was very clear that she knew her business and she gave me several ideas that I had not even thought about.  I told her that I would definitely recommend her to friends and I will very likely use her again myself for my next home project!

"Chris is super nice and very professional and knowledgeable. He took care of a somewhat difficult access to my attic and put everything back as he found it. I don't have a large attic, but he spent over 45 minutes checking every nook and crannie! Afterwards, he showed me pictures of areas that could use more insulation and a leak in the AC duct that I had suspected. I have asked him for an estimate to complete this work. I think he is very reliable, reasonable in suggestions and costs and will do a great job!

"W/H Construction did a wonderful job on our termite damage remodel. His crew showed up within a week to give a quote and brought the job in on budget, and actually 2 weeks earlier than they had originally projected the job. His crew was courteous and Bill, the owner, was always eager to communicate with us as the owners the steps of the job and what would happen throughout the re-build. Mr. Bill and his crew treated our home with care and kept each work area clean and as dust free as possible. Bill also daily communicated with his workers and treated them each with respect and care. He thanked them frequently for their hard work and made sure they food and transportation each time they came to the job. He truly was an owner of Character and Honesty and I would highly recommend him for any of your remodeling or building needs and I will definitely use his company again. He can do any job from plumbing to roofing to building to decks. Sincerely, Todd Kennedy, Mobile, AL."

Basement Remodel FAQs, answered by experts

It’s less expensive to finish your basement than it is to build an addition to your home. The average cost to refinish a basement is $32,000 (between $7 and $23 per square foot) while building an addition to your home costs $50,325 ($80 to $210 per square foot). Depending on the size of your basement and other factors, like moving plumbing and electrical, refinishing a basement is a more cost-effective option in most cases.

In many homes, an unfinished basement is an ideal place for an in-ground pool. The concrete floors, protection against water damage, and access to the ground below your home make this a large contender. Speak with a local basement remodeling contractor to ensure your space is right for the large construction.

You technically can paint wires in a basement ceiling, but there are several important safety and code considerations. It's safe to paint non-metallic sheathed cable as long as the labeling remains visible. You can also paint low-voltage wires and conduit and junction boxes to help them blend into your basement.

However, you should not paint damaged or deteriorated wiring is a fire hazard because it poses a fire hazard. The same goes for painting over high-heat wires that connect to heat-generating appliances or systems. Be sure to avoid painting multiple coats onto any wires, as that traps heat and poses fire risks.

Create a checklist, reimagine the space use, set a realistic budget, choose materials and aesthetic details, and get professional support for guidelines and troubleshooting.

In addition to overseeing new home builds, construction managers work on large renovations and major remodels. For example, they may work with designers and oversee the construction of a finished basement, kitchen renovation, or a home addition. They may also oversee large-scale remodels, such as the update of a historic home. Construction managers step into small projects for more specific assistance, such as building budgets and compiling the team.
