While it’s possible to run a gutter for 30 to 40 feet without a downspout in some cases, you really should place a downspout every 20 feet. Too long of a gutter run without a downspout means that the downspouts you do have will more easily get overwhelmed since the gutters divert water from a larger portion of the roof to them.

On average, gutters need to be replaced every 20 years. Unprotected gutters in more extreme weather conditions are more prone to breaking and may need to be replaced sooner. Meanwhile, proper maintenance can extend your gutter’s life span even further. That said, proper installation, gutter hangers to provide additional support, and gutter guards or helmets all play an important role in how long your gutters last.

To clean the tops of gutter guards, use a soft-bristle brush or a leaf blower to remove debris like leaves, twigs, or dirt. For stubborn grime, spray the guards with a garden hose, directing water downward to avoid forcing debris into the gutter. If the guards are removable, take them off and rinse thoroughly before reattaching. Regular cleaning, especially during fall or after storms, will help maintain their effectiveness.

Gutter guards work in heavy rain, but perhaps not as well. The main purpose of gutter guards is to protect your gutters from getting clogged with debris, which can be carried (or worsened) by heavy rain. However, a clogged gutter isn’t the only reason rain isn’t traveling through your gutter properly. Other reasons include roof shingles extending past your gutters, improperly installed gutters, or incorrect gutter sizes.
