"For months I had been going out of my mind trying to get a contractor out to look at my staircase, which was rotting, painted over, and falling apart. On the very same day that I contacted Chrisâ Home Repair, they came out to my house to measure my staircase. Chris and his team installed the new stairs the very same day that the materials arrived. I could not be more happy with their work and will be consulting them for similar jobs in the future."

"Previously I hired a different roofer (that I found on this site) to install a metal roof on an existing carport/shop, but the whole job went "South." The project dragged on for weeks. Numerous excuses for not returning. The leak became worst causing more sheetrock to fall. When he did return, his repair didn't fix it. I declined his offer to make a second fix and fired him. I then got bids from other roofers who explained that the pitch was insufficient and that no underlament was used. But their quotes to repair were more than the original job. Then I contacted Jason. He arrived the next day. He confirmed what the other roofers said. Het recommended that the most economical thing to do was tear it down to the decking and do a rolled asphalt torch down roof. I agreed. The price was great. He started when he said he would. His crew did the work in two days! Very professional. My shop is dry. Only wish I had called him first."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

For a 12x20-foot (240-square-foot) deck, you can expect to pay between $7,200 and $14,400. This cost is based on a general price of $30 to $60 per square foot. The final price will depend on factors such as the decking material, design complexity, deck type, location, and local labor costs. Keep in mind that add-ons will increase the total; for example, adding an under-deck drainage system to a deck of this size could cost an additional $7,700.

The cost to build a second-story deck averages $4,800, though the actual price could range as low as $420 to upwards of $16,000. While labor costs range between 35% and 50% of the total project cost, the materials and complexity of design will ultimately lead you to save or spend more money on this home addition.

A deck that isn’t attached to a house is called a floating or freestanding deck. These standalone decks are built near ground level, so they usually don’t need deck stairs. Some don’t even require permits. Generally speaking, building a floating deck is faster and more DIY-friendly than constructing one that’s connected to your home.

Footings for ground-level decks need to be at least 12 inches deep, and some areas require them to be even deeper. A standard range for deck footings is anywhere from 12 to 48 inches. The minimum footing depth is determined by an area’s frost line and soil conditions. If you’re unsure how deep to install deck footings, check local building codes to find the minimum footing depth in your area.
