How Much Would it Cost to Add a Single Garage Door to the Back of a House with Brick Siding?

Question by NancyF: There is currently no garage door in the back of the house. I would like to be able to drive through the garage to the back yard. The brick would have to be removed and a garage door added in order to do this. Is this possible to do after the house is completely built? If so, what would the cost be?
Answered by LCD: Wow - a LOT more than putting a gate in your fence if there is any way you can drive around the house to the back yard instead. Especially considering how often you are likely to want to do this.
I would think, not knowing which are the main load-bearing walls in your house but usually front and back (the sides with roof eaves and rafter tails) so assuming you would be going through a load bearing wall, you are talking probably $1000 bare minimum and more likely (especially if you are talking 2-car door) more like $1500-2500 just to frame for the door including the header beam - plus ballpark $1000-2000 plus or minus for the door itself for normal quality doors, assuming normal roll-up sectional panel type door, with opener. Can go up to around double that with fancier doors, steel faced, etc. So - $2500-5000 total installed cost range is what I would expect with normal economical stock door. Obviously, probably in the lower half of that range in most areas for a one-car door, higher half for 2-car, or possibly more if there is an unusual difficult framing issue.
I presume the door would not require a taking out supporting column or wall section for any cross-garage support beam - get into messing with an existing main support beam for upper stories would greatly complicate matters and cost. Normally, such beams would run "crosswise" to a garage so ordinarily you would not be anywhere near to that.
Garage Doors would obviously seem to be the Search the List category for this, but most garqage door companies do not cut through walls and install supports to frame the rough opening, so the best Search the List category for this would likely be Builders - Garages, Barns, Sheds.
Here is an Angies List article on the question of the cost of the installed door itself, once the rough opening is framed out.
