Motorcycle Service
Made a run to Missouri, coming back to Montana through Iowa, South Dakota and Wyoming. Before the trip, I put two new Dunlop E3 tires, front & back, on my 2006 FLHRCI Road King, including tubes and rim strips. Had my rear tire go flat about 30 miles East of the town of Gillette, WY. It was a Saturday evening, I found out there was a Deluxe Harley Davidson dealer in Gillette, called them and told them of my issue. They were closing but said if I could get there soon, I could store my bike there till Monday, I had the bike towed to Deluxe HD of Gillette. When I arrived, I told the Service Manager Calvin that I just needed the rear flat repaired, he looked at me with this "smirk" on his face and said "we don't repair, we replace". I explained that it was a brand new tire, here come that "smirk" again, he said "its a liability issue". I was trying not to lose control here, I seen right away what Calvin was doing and being out of state and trying to get home, decided I would have to "bite the bullet" here and purchase another new rear tire from Deluxe. As Calvin is writing up the work order, he looks up at me again with that "smirk" and said, "if we don't have a tire that matches your front tire tread pattern, we can't mount the rear tire". It was like being hit with a sledge hammer, I said to Calvin "what are you saying to me, I have to buy a new front tire also"? He said "yes" and that all they carry are Dunlop Tires, I sighed a bit of relief and told Calvin that my tires are Dunlop E3's. He then said "all we carry are the regular Dunlop Tires", he got up and left for a short minute, when he returned he said "with smirk", "we don't have a tread that matches. I told him that my front tire is "brand new", I don't need a front tire, I have a flat "rear" tire. Calvin said with "smirk", its a liability issue. Now Dunlop Tires say there is "no issue" with mixing their D 402 and E3 tire tread patterns. What liability issue ? I told Calvin that I would sign a waiver so there would be no "liability issue". I told him that the HD Dealer in Kalispell, MT allows a rider to sign a waiver if need be. Calvin looked at me "with smirk" and said "we don't do that here". It was clear what was going on here, they had a out of state rider who need help, they had me and they knew it, I knew it ! I picked up my bike that Monday, 11am. Calvin sat down to write up the bill, I asked him if the Deluxe HD gave a Military/Veterans Discount like they do at both Grizzly and Glacier HD of Montana ? There was that "smirk" from Calvin the Service Manager, he replied "ya know, I don't know, that will be $680.76". There bill and the 2 day hotel bill came to just under $1000 for my visit to the friendly city of Gillette, WY.
On my way past Grizzly HD in Missoula, MT. , I stopped and ran this story by the service manager there, all he could do is shake his head. I then stopped at Glacier HD in Kalispell and asked them what they would do under the same circumstance, he said they would "advise" me, then if I decided to keep the mismatched treads, they would have me sign a waiver and repair or replace the rear flat. That is how it should have been done. I am in talks with HD Corporate about the Deluxe Dealership in Gillette, Wy, it appears they have heard of stories like this before from them.....Be Aware !
