The contractor put supporting 2x12's in the wall for the beam. The boards were slightly crooked and stuck out. Instead of shaving off the protruding corner of the 2x12, they put a different thickness of sheetrock over that cut out area of the wall. They said the mudder could level out the difference with his mud. He put mud on it several times but kept explaining that there was no way he could level it out since there was such a big difference between the existing sheetrock and the new inserted sheetrock. We now have an area coming all the way down our wall by 16 inches across that is indented. It is very obvious. Also, the part they added to the kitchen wall to vault the ceiling is crooked. They said the existing lower part of the wall was crooked. We showed them that it wasn't the lower part. There is also a visible line all the way around the walls at the eight foot high area where they added the new sheetrock to vault the ceiling. The mudder again said that it would have to be 30 feet high for him to be able to blend it in with mud. He said they should have put new sheetrock on all the walls. They put in two upper windows in the vaulted end wall telling us that we were getting gas filled windows. When I called the glass company to find out how to care for them, they told me that they don't do gas filled windows for our area. The windows cost us $1794.00 for two windows 2x4 with a slant top. The glass company said the two windows cost $244.00. The contractor said it took 32 hours to put them in but if that were true, it was because the two workers fought with each other over everything. The glass company said they even fought when they went to pick up the windows. They didn't know what they were doing and couldn't agree on anything. We noticed that our front storm bay window was broken and we told them that they would have to replace it. They said it was from the sun and not from them.. They ended up putting in a new storm window.and after they were gone, I discovered that it was a stress fracture because the window downstairs cracked in the same place. They said they would come back and finish the outside where they cut out for the windows and where they put the beam through. They didn't, We had to finish it that summer. In the end, when I told them I wasn't happy at all with the walls, one of the contractors said (after we had painted the walls),"Well, what do you want us to do? Do you want the mudder to come back?" It had been a long seven weeks for us in the basement and we knew the mudder couldn't fix the problem. We have to live with these walls until we can afford to replace them.
