First contacted contractor 02/25/11 to get an estimate on fence (1 of 3 estimates)  Received estimated approx 3rd week in March.  Lowest bid ($6,540.00) so I contacted contractor to accept bid.  Sent a check for $3500.00 to contractor as half of cost of fence due up front. There were a couple of things on the bid that were not correct so I spoke with contractor to make corrections (1 gate not 2, 4" slats not 6" slats, concrete work would include retaining wall on north side to level out yard (even talked about bringing in dirt when fence was in).  We had a rainy spring so getting started was postponed several times because of weather.  Work completed end of July, well kind of - still missing a couple of slats and replacements for slats that were used and are very warped!  Every time I called to talk to contractor it was always oh yes we can do this or that or I'll meet you at your house - never any follow through and never showed up for appointments!  Concrete workers made a mess not only in my yard, but also in my neighbors yard.  Contractor told my neighbor they would make sure his side of the fence would be ok - instead they left concrete everywhere and about a 4" gap between fence and his yard that he had to fill in.  Some days workers would show up and some days not!  Finally put "posts" in - they were supposed to be enclosed in wood slats - 2 sides no enclosed pipes.  After posts and supports for slats were in - I left work to check on fence - good thing - they were using 6" slats and no retaining wall.  I made the workers stop and had them call contractor - he came over - and tried to tell me no retaining wall and 6" slats (I had just talked to him 2 days prior because the slats that were left at my house were 6" and we agreed they were not the right size).  Workers took down 6" slats and used cinder block on north side of yard to even out fence.  4" slats finally put up!  Gate latch had "1" screw in it - had to call them back to fix that and to replace old wood they used at the bottom of the gate because they ran out of materials.  When materials were gone and I could see the side of my house, the first to rows (bottom and 2nd row) were damaged!  All the materials thrown against the side of the house - siding now looks all chewed up!  Contractor told me the siding needed replaced anyway because siding was soft!  They did come back and match the paint and "patch it up"  Looks terrible but that is all contractor would do.  Sprinkler system was cut up so they could put in the fence (I thought the plan was to move the fence in 6" (ended up being 12").  Had to hire someone else to fix the spinkler system after they fixed it!  It took over 2 months to put up a fence that should have taken 2 weeks after the rainy weather stopped!  Seems like they showed up when they felt like - I would call and there was always an excuse.  I called 2nd week in August to get replacement slats for warped boards and to finish off the fence - contractor dropped off several slats (again we were supposed to meet so I could pay him and he didn't show - then left the slats later in the day).  I mailed him a check for $3,040.00 and wrote him a long letter stating pretty much what this report says and asked for a 10% discount to cover cost of repairs made to fix his mistakes.  What I got was a phone call from contractor while I was at work - demanding $1,000.00!  He said I still owed him that amount.  I told him I would get copies of the checks to him to prove payment was made in full - he started yelling at me and told me if he didn't have $1,000.00 that day he would take a chain saw to my house and take the fence down and then sue me - he was tired of dealing with me!  Police report made because of the threat to my property!  He called again the next day and said he had made a mistake on the payment that he was sorry.  I am the one who made the mistake by hiring him as a contractor!!!!  Told him I never wanted to talk to him again.   I did get copies of the checks and mailed them to him.  Nightmare from beginning to end!!!!!
