At the end of the first week, Mr. Woods asked for more money again. I mentioned that Mr. McComas said I didn’t have to pay more until completed. But then they added more cost to the job which shouldn’t have been my problem. I pointed out things that needed touched up to Mr. Woods. One evening over the phone he threatened to leave the job. I asked how would Mr. McComas feel about that. He responded that Mr. McComas told him he could get his tools and leave when I hesitated about paying more. He again wanted paid in full before he was coming back the following day to finish up. He needed to seal the shower. He left a spray can for me to add another layer. He indicated that it was the homeowner’s job to seal. I had never installed a shower. How did I know how to seal? Well, it was a spray can. He installed the shower head but didn’t check after. My handyman had to adjust the shower head because it was leaking. The curtain rod is a tension rod and has fallen three times. I also think the step into the shower should be a little deeper so the water won’t leak out from around the shower curtain. I would not use them again and do not recommend them.
I should have known that this would be a less than desirable transaction when I kept getting calls from this man who thought that he was talking to someone else.
Typical contractor in this area. He asked for more money half way through when he was already charging an exorbitant price to begin with because he had to "hire a new guy." That's not my problem and should have been budgeted for.
The city shut the operation down in the middle because he neglected to get the proper building permits that he CHARGED me to get. He had to clean that mess up quick.
They tried to take shortcuts, and employees got mad when I pointed them out.
Honestly, they did a job that I'm sure they've never done and were not qualified to do. Perhaps this would have been different if it was some other sort of work.
In the end, we have retaining walls, but they are not installed according to the manufacturer of the stone's recommendations and I would not use this contractor again based on the experience that I had.
They arrived on time - went right to work. It was just supposed to be a new supply valve and also the flapper in the tank. The supply line was extremely old and obviously had to be replaced, as well. They had to cut a hole through the wall and put in a copper supply line.
They patched the wall, and cleaned up the site.
Please note: I'm not sure of the total price since I was using a home warranty service, and I only paid a deductible.
When we got to the end of our budget, we were told we still owed them another $2,000. We found the money and paid them. When we called the contractor and asked him to stop by so we could discuss some issues with him, he refused to come over. He finally called drunk and cussed out my husband for daring to request he come fix problems with items that had already been done. He said that if we wanted those things fixed, we would have to pay for it. We felt as though these were mistakes made on things we had already paid for. These were the things we wanted him to address.
1. Our yard was left a mess. They had to dig up more of the yard than was necessary because they busted our water line when digging the trench for the footers.
2. They left massive chunks of concrete in the creek behind our house. We were told that they were going to bust it up into small pieces and lay it on the bank. We said that was fine. However, when we inspected what had been done, we found that the pieces were too big and had rolled down into the creek. The contractor was told by me, my husband, and several of our neighbors that those pieces could not be left where they were and the size they were because they could potentially clog the culvert and cause the houses across the way to flood.
3. The roof was leaking. We were under the impression that the siding and roof were completed. After the first rain, we noticed there was a leak where the addition joined the house. When we hired another person to install the gutters, he inspected the roof and said that it was fine. However, the final pieces of siding had not been installed on the side of the house and could be causing the leak.
4. The drywall that was hung was done very poorly.
"I met with [member name removed]. They were under the impression that the contract for the work included material; $18,400 to do the following: Build an addition to their home of 1120 sq. feet and side it and the rest of the house. That would equate to about $16.42 a sq. ft (not including the siding and installation for the rest of the house. For those of you reading this, just go on line and look at "building an addition cost". At this point I told [member name removed] that was impossible. Later [member name removed] came to my house and met with me and my wife.. [member name removed] refused to come in. We sat with him and I explained the following: I would work with him on a weekly basis. He could let us go at any time if he wasn't happy. He was well aware that we would not finish the job and he may have to do some his self. After this I dealt with [member name removed] an rarley spoke to [member name removed]. Now lets take a look at facts [member name removed] failed to mention in her statement: 1. I never took money up front at anytime for material or labor they paid me on a weekly basis. 2. I passed along all my discounts for materiial which I purchased. I never make money on material. 3. Their neighbor installed the roof, they claimed to leak, and they paid him directly 4.[member name removed] added two more items to their list after we started: Remove a large section of their driveway and they wanted it repored and remove and redue the soffet aroung their old house after we sided it. 5. When [member name removed] said he ran out of money, we agreed my crew would move on to something else till he decided what he wanted us to do. He ask me at this point how much more it would take to finish the drywall and a few other things. We agreed to take a couple week to review the situation. At this point, he had paid me approx. $16,000 short of the $18,400 and NOT including the extra work he wanted. 6. [member name removed] also failed to mention that me and my son worked two weekend with [member name removed], assisting him with his electric FREE OF CHARGE, 7. She also failed to mention that I offored her husband over $1100 of framing material to help build his workshop. 8. Also, some weeks, during the time we worked there, I just took draws just to pay my guys and nothing for me or my company. Workers Comp, and Liability Insuranse IS NOT FREE. 9. I tried to contact [member name removed] twice after we left and they would not return my call. 10. My son met their neighb.or out at the gas station and he stated "when you run out of money, nobody wants to work for free." 11. I furnished [member name removed] a list of over 35 references before we began My wife told my to take a day and night to sleep on this before I made my response. I couldn't believe someone would say this about me and my company after I tried so hard to help them. I do believe that their is a communication problem in the household. After thinking about the whole situation I think that sometimes my heart is bigger than my head. I will never do a job like this again whithout a contract. In closing, I will state that I have worked with over 500 customers and have had only 4 I could not please. My record so far is over a 99% approval rating. I'll take that. I am an approved VET installation of baths and whole house rentavations. Those guys are not easy to please. I don't care who you are, You can't please everyone. If anyone reading this, would like some work done I can give you over 100 reverences. My policy is not to take any money up front. I am a good contractor that cares deeply about his work and pleasing the people I work for. I am sorry [member name removed] ran out on money, but anyone that expects that much work to be done for that price is just lost. Average cost on a addition is between $42 and $90 and it just depends on what you want to do. I wish [member name removed] the best. But any contractor reading this you already know to stay away from them."
