The receptionist said they had "a guy who would be in the area already" so he could stop by to do the install. Once he arrived, with another workman, they did the install in less than 20 minutes and were extremely nice and professional.
All that was necessary was replacing an existing non-grounded outlet to a grounded one. There was an old stove vent hood in place near where the outlet was that DID NOT need to be removed in order to install the new outlet. It was small and laid flush against the kitchen cabinets. It was NOT in the way of where the outlet needed to be replaced and it was NOT hooked up to any wiring. There was no need to remove it but ONE of the workmen did, with almost ZERO help from the other worker (perhaps a minute at the most.)
The reason I bring this up is because when we asked how much the outlet install would cost, they said weren?t sure and that they?d bill us, which made sense. After all, they were doing the work, not the billing. The problem came when the bill arrived and was almost $200 for a job of less than 20 minutes. They billed at a rate of $60 and 1.5 hours each + the cost of the outlet, which to me seemed WAY over the top for the following reasons.
(1) Despite the fact the billing person (who I had to keep calling since they didn?t return 3 calls over 2 weeks) said "they always send 2 people for a range hood removal." Fair enough, but I never mentioned there was a range hood to remove to the receptionist and she never said they would be sending 2 workmen. She said she had "a guy who would be in the area already", not 2.
(2) As mentioned, the range hood had NO reason to be removed and we didn't ask them to remove it. I did mention we were going to put in a microwave in the spot, which I assume is why they removed the stove vent hood, even though they we're not asked to?
(3) Even if it did require 2 workmen because of the oven hood, they were there for less than 20 minutes so I would have expected at the most, a charge of $60 for 1 hr x 2 workers for $120 in labor (even with the "travel time" the billing person mentioned they charge because after all they were "in the area already", right?) Instead the charge was 1.5 hrs x $60 per hr x 2 for $180 in labor, which simply cannot be justified.
Should they respond to this post, I'm sure they?ll indicate they have policies, guidelines & procedures in place that require they do what they did, which is perfectly acceptable. Just be sure you know what those are before hiring them because if you make the mistake we did of not getting an estimate beforehand (which was clearly my mistake), you might be VERY disappointed when you receive your bill!
