When I arrived five minutes late, there was no one at the reception desk. I could see both stylists who were working at the time, and neither bothered to acknowledge my arrival or welcome me to the shop. After waiting for a couple of minutes, one of the stylists finished with his previous patron and greeted me. It turns out he was my stylist ("Oz"), and had I been on time, I would have ended up waiting about 10 minutes for him.
As stylists go, Oz was not at all communicative. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm used to stylists making some small talk with their patrons. He seemed to take his time with the haircut, but he did almost the entire process with clippers rather than scissors -- something I haven't often experienced. He also managed to nip my ear with the clippers and draw blood -- another unique experience. He acknowledged his mistake indirectly ("Did I get you?") but he did not apologize or do anything to treat the nick.
The haircut was followed by a shampoo and hot towel to the face. That was pleasant enough, although in my experience, it is unusual to get a shampoo after the cut. He cleaned up my neck with a straight razor and hot lather. Again, that was a pleasant experience.
When our session wrapped up, I handed him $30 for a $23 haircut, and Oz had the audacity to ask if I wanted change back. Is he accustomed to getting tips of 30% when he cuts the ear of his patrons? That was pretty much the last straw for me. It might turn out to be a decent haircut, but the experience wasn't what I was expecting. The stylists were both wearing t-shirts and jeans, so neither of them looked particularly stylish. The shop seemed drab and lifeless. No music. Just the movie "Spaceballs" on TV with closed captioning and the stylists debating about whose turn it was to answer the phone.
Maybe I caught the shop on a bad day, but I don't think I'll return. The "experience" wasn't worth the effort of getting there and finding a parking place. At $23 per cut, I expect something better.
ill. I was very pleased with the hair cut, especially for the first
time. It might even have been the best cut I have ever had. I will be
going back, even though the price is almost double what I used to pay.
