Initially I had some trouble with them, because one of their workers that came in wasn't installing a part. I wasn't at the house at the time and he just left, without installing it. Apparently they fired that worker later, but after I've had the experience with him, they completed the job that he was supposed to do at the price that they quoted me for. They did a good job coming out and giving me an estimate on the work. And once they've completed the work, the price didn't change. The job was done nicely without creating any kind of mess or anything like that. They were pretty prompt and they were on time. What they did, they did it professionally.

The worker performed an annual service of my unit and went into the attic to check out a leak. He determined that it was not my air conditioner but a leak in the roof. He explained everything very thoroughly to me.

First of all would like to say that the salesman Tim Fernett wsa very nice and cooperative throughout our bad experience. We got 3 different quotes for a heating/ac unit. Appalachian Heating was teh lowest estimate (beating Sears and Childers) We decided to go with Appalachian Heating because Mr. Fernett seemed very knowledgable and the price was over 1000 cheaper than the other two quotes. That being siad, my fiance had hernia surgery one week prior to the scheduled installation date. On the first day of labor he noticed that some of his pain medication appeared to be missing. My fiance is an ex police officer (14 years of service) and had only taken 4 pills of the prescribed medication on the first 2 days after his surgery. The pill bottle set right beside his blood pressure medicine and he noticed the bottle looked pretty empty. Not wanting to falsely accuse anyone he counted the pills and took a picture of them on the days newspaper to display the date. He went to pick up our 3 year old son from preschool and was gone approximately 20 minutes and when he returned 1 more pill was missing. Not knowing which of the two workers was taking the medication, he set up a video camera in our kitchen, which is where we keep all the medications in a cabinet that our children cannot reach. On day two the worker was caught on camera stealing more pain medication while my fiance again picked up our child from preschool. The video shows the worker taking several pills from teh bottle and ingesting one before proceeding to pick up other medicine bottles and read the label as well as open several of the lids and look inside the bottles. Not finding anymore pain medications he is also seen opening two other cabinets and looking inside them before exiting the view of the camera. Obviously we are thinking the worker has went through other areas of our house because most people do not store medication in the kitchen instead of the bathrooms. We were wondering what else is missing and feeling violated that someone has been looking through our house. My fiance immediately calls the owner, Dan Akers and asks him to come to our house. Mr. Akers states he is busy on another job and asks what is wrong. My fiance explains that one of the workers has been stealing medication at which point Mr. Akers tells him he does not believe him and that he drug tests his workers. My fiance informs him that we have the worker on video and Mr. Akers states that he doesn't know what to tell us other than to ask the worker to leave and he will send someone else to finish the job in a couple of days. At this time my fiance informs him that we have 2 children and cannot be without heat that long and we do not wish to operate emergency heat due to the expense for two days, especially since we are the victims. Mr. Akers says there is nothing else he can do. My fiance had already called our neighbor who is a police officer in the drug investigation unit and he arrives, views the video and arrests the worker who still had several pills in his pocket upon arrest. My fiance informs Mr. Akers to come get his equipment and supplies off our property and we will use a different heating company. At this time Mr. Fernett called my Fiance and said he was on his way (he was on his way to Oak Hill when he heard and turned around to come back) Mr. Fernett was very nice and conviced my fiance to let the other worker stay and finish the job and re-check what was done by the arrested worker (due to the face he was under the influence while doing the electrical aspects of the job) The job got finished and re-checked and Mr. Fernett gave us the extended warrantly for free. Our problem is basically with the owner of the business. He was very unprofesisonal and unsympathetic to our needs. We realize it was not his fault that he had a bad worker but as a business owner he did nothing to help correct the problem that ultimately reflects negatively on his business. He basically said sorry about your luck and there's nothing we can do for you. I would not recommend using this company. It killed me to write them a 5000 check after the way we were treated and I would have much rather have paid 1100 extra dollars to Childers for the sheer principal of the matter. Tim Fernett was the only plus side to the whole ordeal and I hope he finds a job with a more reputable company.
Response from Appalachian Heating
"Mrs. [removed member name], I certainly apologize that you had to experience this at your home. We understand that you gave us great trust by choosing us do this work in your home. We are truly sorry that this happened. We have always had a zero tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol. We have a mandatory pre-employment drug screening as well as random drug tests throughout the year. There is no excuse nor tolerance for this behavior and this employee was let go immediately. As far as your installation of your HVAC equipment the salesmen responsible for this job and install crew responded to your home immediately. He was an hour or so away so it did take some time for him to travel to your home. We also had the system thoroughly checked after it was completed. We provided at no charge to you an extend 10 year warranty covering both parts and labor on the entire install. I have reviewed your service records and see that to date (5-5-14) there has not been one service call requested at this location so I am pleased that everything has been working properly. In regards to the owner he is not fully aware of every jobs status and every employee’s location. We have a standard operating procedure which follows an order of hierarchy. It is the responsibility of the salesmen/foremen to manage the job from start to finish, including problems which may arise. The owner was in constant contact with the salesman during this event and directed Tim to have the system inspected as well as to give the free extended warranty and a few free preventive maintenance checkups. We have been installing heating and cooling equipment in southern WV for over 65 years. We have never had something like this before and nothing like it since this. Appalachian Heating takes this matter very seriously. Again we sincerely apologize that this happened and hope that you will be confident that we will stand behind our work and do/did what it takes to make things right. Sincerely, Daniel"
