I emailed Wicks and asked if they could come out and replace the boards. Wicks had had to do this the first time around on the entire floor because there were dozens of stains after 50 years of being covered with carpet. Carrie from the office there told me that they could do it but she warned me that there would probably be a color difference between the new replacement boards and the current floor. I figured it would be okay since Wicks had replaced so many boards before and I couldn't even tell the difference. Also, I was going to put another rug down and wouldn't really notice anyway.
The carpenter came out over two days - once to replace the boards and stain them and another time to apply the clear protecting coat. The carpenter was right on time both days and super friendly. The replacement boards look great and match very well. I can tell the difference but that's because I know they were replacements. No one else has noticed them.
Excellent, the crews were great, Mike the owner came out a couple of times to do some finish work, great job we were very happy with the outcome.
I had existing hardwood floors that were around 50 years old and had spent at least the last 35 years under carpet. I ripped up the carpet myself as well as removed the nails and staples. The floor was pretty beat up with black stains (pet related, I'm guessing), scratches, nail and staple holes and missing finish. I was really not expecting miracles with the floor. If it looked even halfway presentable, I would have been happy. By the time Wick's was done, it looked like a new floor had been put in. The only thing that was even telling that it was an old floor was that some of the staple holes could still be seen. However, the holes made it look like those cool urban loft floors on HGTV so I was pretty happy.
I wasn't going to have the nail holes filled in because I was concerned that the floor would look worse with the holes filled in but Wick's showed me a sample of my floor with the holes filled in. I couldn't even tell the holes were there except on close inspection. Just looking across the floor, you can't even see them. I had also forgotten about the thresholds on the transitions from the wood flooring to the bathroom and kitchen tile floors. On the last day, one of the guys asked if I wanted to have Wick's do them and I said sure because I didn't want to deal with it. I'm glad I did because what I got were custom thresholds that were installed and stained to match the floors. No way I could have come up with something that nice on my own.
Wick's took the time to explain everything they were going to do beforehand and as they went along. They also give you a handy sheet to tell you how to take care of your hardwood floors once you have them (a good thing since I'm a hardwood floor rookie). I had originally only contracted for the living room and hallway and one bedroom but decided a couple days before to add two more bedrooms. That threw a wrench into the scheduling, obviously, but Wick's was a champ about the whole thing and worked with me so that the whole floor got done.
The floor was done over three days (one for sanding and replacing bad boards, one for staining and one for clear coating). I highly recommend using their dust reduction system which is an apparatus that works like a dust collector on power tools and sucks the dust right from the sanding machine out to their truck. There was absolutely no dust whatsoever for me to clean up. In fact, there was nothing whatsoever for me to clean up (no tools, no debris, etc.). It really is the way to go.
"Thank you so much for your kind words! The scheduling gods were smiling on us and I was so happy we were able to get that additional work done for you. Enjoy your new floors! Carrie Ollis Office Manager Wicks Wood Floors, Inc."
